PREFACE.

[ocr errors]

N reproducing this book in a new and more improved form, the Proprietors beg to say they have spared neither expense, trouble, nor literary labour in the endeavour to render it a most complete and comprehensive Guide to Ireland. The reception accorded to the former editions justifies them in the opinion that their efforts have been appreciated; and they confidently expect this edition will be still more successful. To the English and American tourist the Guide ought to form a most instructive and interesting companion, and to those who are better acquainted with the scenic attractions of Ireland, it will probably be the means of informing them of numerous scenes of interest which may have been hitherto almost entirely unknown to them.

The Publishers hope that the vast amount of information conveyed in its pages will induce a still more numerous throng of tourists to visit the unrivalled scenery of

"The emerald gem of the western world,"

and see for themselves the placid loveliness of Wicklow and Killarney, with their surpassingly beautiful surroundings; the sublime and wondrous attractions of the Giant's Causeway, with its sea-board line, unrivalled throughout the world for glorious panoramic and scenic effect; and the ecclesiastical antiquities profusely scattered broadcast over the island, all of which cannot fail in investing with a charm a summer holiday of Ireland.

A number of new illustrations have been added, whic bring more prominently before the reader the scenes he ir to visit; and, for the convenience of the uninitiated, the I of the leading hotels and posting establishments, with necessary information, are given in their proper places.

In conclusion, the mission of this book is intended by Publishers to be the pleasing souvenir of a pleasant visi well as the travelling companion of the Tour, and reference in after time to the different localities which may visited.
