THE HEIR OF ALL THINGS.

66 THIS IS THE HEIR. "-Matt. xxi. 38.

GOD, WHO AT SUNDRY TIMES AND IN DIVERS MANNERS SPAKE IN TIME PAST UNTO THE FATHERS BY THE PROPHETS, HATH IN THESE LAST DAYS SPOKEN UNTO US BY HIS SON, WHOM HE HATH APPOINTED HEIR OF ALL THINGS."-Heb. i. 1, 2.

In the first of these passages, the husbandmen to whom the vineyard was let out are represented as recognising the Son of the Proprietor, and conspiring to kill him. "This is the heir," they say among themselves; "come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance." The second is part of the opening paragraph of the invaluable Letter to the Hebrews, in which our Lord is described as Prophet, King, and Priest. He hath "spoken" unto us; He is appointed "Heir" of all things; and by himself He hath
