DOUBLE SULPHATE OF POTASH AND MAGNESIA OR “DOUBLE MANURE SALTS”. Six samples were analyzed this year and the results are given in Table IX. This salt contains potash and magnesia combined as sulphate and is relatively free from chlorine, which makes it well adapted for use in tobacco fertilizers. It generally contains from 25 to 28 per cent of potash and from 8 to 12 per cent of magnesia. In the last three years, however, seven out of twenty-one samples examined by us have shown amounts of magnesia less than 8 per cent, these ranging from 6.6 down to as low as 3 per cent. In only four of the total number has chlorine exceeded 4 per cent and in none has it reached 5 per cent. The average potash content in samples analyzed this year is 27.67 per cent and the average cost per pound of potash, at the prices quoted, is 5.1 cents. |
