God but one, 1. Cor. viii. 4. That there is one Father of all, Ephef. iv. one Lord Jefus Chrift, Ephef. iv 5. and one Holy Spirit, Ephef. iv. 4. That the Father is God, 1. Cor viii. 6. The Son is God, John i 1 and theHoly Ghoft

Chrift, and conveyed to us by the Fellowship of the
Holy Ghoft.

This Creed was first published in the eighth Century. The condemnatory Expreffions contained in it, relate only to thofe who when they clearly fee the Truth, fof the Doctrines contained in this Creed, perverfely fhut their Eyes against Conviction, and chuse darkness rather than light.

Which Faith, except every one do keep whole and undefiled: without doubt he fhall perish everlastingly.

And the Catholick Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;

Neither confounding the Perfons: nor dividing the Subftance.

For there is one Perfon of the Father, another of the Son : and another of the Holy Ghoft.

But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft is all one: the Glory equal, the Majefty co-eternal.

Such as the Father is, fuch is the Son: and fuch is the Holy Ghoft.

The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate: and the Holy Ghoft

uncreate.

The Father incomprehenfible, the Son incomprehenfible: and the Holy Ghost incomprehenfible.

The Father eternal, the Son eternal: and the Holy Ghost eternal.

And yet they are not three eternals: but one eternal.

As also there are not three incomprehenfibles, nor three uncreated: but one uncreated, and one incomprehenfible.

So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty: and the Holy Ghoft Almighty.

And yet they are not three Almighties: but one Almighty.

So the Father is God, the Son is God: and the Holy Ghoft is God.

And yet they are not three Gods: but one God.

So likewife the Father is Lord, the Son Lord: and the Holy Ghoft Lord;

Paraphrafe on the God, Acts v. 3. 4.- -and that there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghoft, and these three are cne, 1. John v. 7.-That Jefus Chrift is the only begotten of the Father, John i. 14.

who suffered for us; and his ownself bare our Sins

And yet not three Lords: but one Lord.

For like as we are compelled by the Chriftian verity: to acknowledge every Perfon by himself to be God and Lord;

So are we forbidden by the Catholick religion: to say, There be three Gods, or three Lords.

The Father is made of none; neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone: not made, nor created, but begotten.

The Holy Ghoft is of the Father, and of the Son: neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.

So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghofts.

And in this Trinity, none is afore, or after other: none is greater, or lefs than another;

But the whole three perfons are co-eternal together: and co-equal.

So that in all things, as is aforefaid: the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped.

He therefore that will be faved: muft thus think of the Trinity. Furthermore, it is neceffary to everlasting falvation: that he also believe rightly the incarnation of our Lord Jefus Chrift.

For the right faith is, that we believe and confess: that our Lord Jefus Chrift, the Son of God, is God and Man;

God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the world: and Man of the fubftance of his Mother, born in the world. Perfect God, and perfect Man: of a reasonable foul, and human flesh subsisting ;

Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead and inferior to the Father, as touching his manhood.

Paraphrafe on the Athanafian Creed.

in his own Body on the Tree, 1. Pet. ii. 21. 24. But his ruption, A&ts ii. 31. for he rofe again the third Day, Soul was not left in Hell, neither did his Body fee Cora Cor. xv. 4. afcended up far above all Heavens, Ephef.

Who, although he be God and Man: yet he is not two, but one Chrift.

One; not by converfion of the Gedhead into flefh, but by taking of the Manhood into God.

One altogether; net by confufion of Subftance: but by unity of perfon.

For as the reafonable foul and flesh is one man: So God and man is one Chrift:

Who fuffered for our falvation: defcended into Hell, rofe again the third day from the dead.

He afcended into Heaven, he fitteth on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty: from whence he fhall come to judge the quick and the dead.

At whose coming all men fhall rife again with their bodies: and fhall give account for their own works.

And they that have done good, fhall go into life everlasting: and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire.

This is the Catholick Faith: which except a man believe faithfully he cannot be faved.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

† The Litany fignifies, as it is expreffed in the Rubrick, a General Supplication: and, according to the Apostles Rule, 1. Tim. ii. 1. confifts 1ft of a Deprecation, that is, of petition against Evil, from O God the Father, &c. to in all Times of our Tribulation, &c. 2dly, Prayer, that is petition for good. 3dly Interceffion, that

is petition for others, from We Sinners do beseech, &c. to the end. It is therefore an excellent Form of Prayer in itself: and, as the People are allowed such a share in the delivery of it with their Voice, feems well calculatèd for devotion.
