Dawns the day, the natal day,
Light of light foretelling,
Ancient shadows melt away,
He with men is dwelling.
Name transcending,
Reign unending,
War by peace repelling.

He is King, the glorious King,
Robed in flesh unstained,
Manhood pure and conquering,
Strength by weakness gained,
GOD possessing
Endless blessing,

Three in One contained.

Blest is JESUS, by Whose Name
GOD and SAVIOUR are the same;
GOD is He and none beside,
Who this day hath glorified.
GOD hath made this Christmastide.
Alleluia! Alleluia !

GOD by Whom the world was made,
And on sure foundation laid;
GOD, Who reigned alone on high,
LORD from all eternity.

GOD has come to earth, the Child
Of a maiden undefiled.

Hail! Holy Babe, in Mary's bosom sleeping!

Sleep, sweetest child, Thy friends their watch are

Kneeling around the manger poor and lowly,
Shepherds and angels with Thy mother holy.

Care not, fair Babe, for all that shall befall Thee; Sleep on and dream of nought that shall appal Thee; Too soon shalt sigh, God's sigh for man outspoken, Sigh, when the Heart refused by men is broken.

O wondrous thing! O mystery unsounded!—
GOD, Who art here in flesh enclos'd and bounded,
Pardon our weakness, help our poor endeavour,
Peace and good-will preserve in us for ever.

Shout, O Zion, and rejoice,
Thou shalt hear the Bridegroom's voice;
Tears and waiting-all are past;
King and Spouse is here at last.

Come then forth to meet Him.

Holy JESU, may we raise
Willing voices in Thy praise;
Holy Mary, mother fair,
May we thy pure gladness share,
Met to-day to greet Him.

To this low vale of tears cam'st down,
In our poor nature drest!

O may the charms of that sweet love,

And fix them there at rest.

JESU, Who took'st that heavenly Name,
Thy blessed purpose to proclaim,

And Thy hid sweetness find.

JESU, draw up our souls to Thee above.

The day is past and over;
All thanks, O LORD, to Thee;
I pray Thee that offenceless
The hours of dark may be :
O JESU, keep me in Thy sight,
And save me through the coming night.

The toils of day are over;

I raise the hymn to Thee,
And ask that free from peril
The hours of fear may be:
O JESU, keep me in Thy sight,
And guard me through the coming night.

Be Thou my soul's preserver,

O GOD! for Thou dost know
How many are the perils

Through which I have to go:
Lover of men, O hear my call,
And guard and save me from them all.
