PSALM CVii. 23. They that go down to the sea in ships, [and occupy their business in great waters ;]

24. These men see the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.

25. For at His word the stormy wind ariseth, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

26. They are carried up to heaven, and down again to the deep their soul melteth away because of the trouble. 27. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.

28. So when they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, He delivereth them out of their distress.

29. For He maketh the storm to cease, so that the waves thereof are still.

30. Then are they glad, because they are at rest and so He bringeth them unto the haven where they would be. 31. O that men would therefore praise the LORD for His goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men !

32. That they would exalt Him also in the congregation of the people, and praise Him in the seat of the elders! 31. O praise the LORD for His goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men.

PSALM 1xxx. 19. Turn Thee again, O LORD GOD of Hosts: shew the light of Thy countenance upon us, and we shall be whole.

4. O LORD GOD of Hosts, how long wilt Thou be angry with Thy people that prayeth?

5. Thou feedest them with the bread of tears and givest them plenteously of tears to drink.

8, 9. Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: Thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it, and when it had taken root it filled the land.

10. The hills were covered with its shadow, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedar-trees.

12. Why hast Thou then broken down her hedge: that all they who pass by pluck off her grapes?

19. Turn Thee again, O LORD GOD of Hosts: shew the light of Thy countenance upon us, and we shall be whole.

PURCELL.

ISAIAH liii. 1. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

2. For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.

3. He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

4. Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken and smitten of GOD, and afflicted.

5. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.

6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

7. He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so openeth He not His mouth.

8. He was taken from prison and from judgment; who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of My people was He stricken.

6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

From the Commination Service.

Turn Thou us, O good LORD, and so shall we be turned. Be favourable, O LORD, be favourable to Thy people, who turn to Thee in weeping, fasting, and praying. For Thou art a merciful GOD, full of compassion, longsuffering, and of great pity. Thou sparest when we deserve punishment, and in Thy wrath thinkest upon mercy. Spare Thy people, good LORD, spare them, and let not Thine heritage be brought to confusion. Hear us, O LORD, for Thy mercy is great, and after the multitude of Thy mercies look upon us.

PURCELL.

PSALM XXviii. 1. Unto Thee will I cry, O LORD my strength: think no scorn of me, lest, if Thou make as though Thou hearest not, I become like them that go down into the pit.

2. Hear the voice of my humble petitions, when I cry unto Thee; when I hold up my hands towards the mercyseat of Thy holy temple.

3. O pluck me not away, neither destroy me with the ungodly and wicked doers, [which speak friendly to their neighbours, but imagine mischief in their hearts.]

6. For they regard not in their minds the works of the LORD, nor the operation of His hands; therefore shall He break them down, and not build them up.

7. Praised be the LORD, for He hath heard the voice of my humble petitions.

8. The LORD is the strength of my life; my heart hath trusted in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart danceth for joy, and in my song will I praise Him. Hallelujah.

PSALM CXXXIV. I. Behold now, praise the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD;

2. Ye that by night do stand in the house of the LORD, [even in the courts of the house of our GOD.]

3. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and praise the LORD.

4. The LORD that made heaven and earth, give thee blessing out of Zion. Hallelujah. Amen.

PSALM CVii. I. O give thanks unto the LORD, for He is gracious, and His mercy endureth for ever.

2. Let them give thanks whom the LORD hath redeemed, and delivered from the hand of the enemy:

3. And gathered them out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 4. They went astray in the wilderness out of the way, and found no city to dwell in.

5. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

6. So they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distress.

8. O that men would therefore praise the LORD for His goodness, and declare the wonders that He doeth for the children of men.

PSALM liii. 7. O that the salvation were given unto Israel out of Sion: O that the LORD would deliver His people out of captivity!

8. Then should Jacob rejoice, and Israel should be right glad.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

B. ROGERS,

I wrestle and pray, O JESU, my Saviour, till blessed by

Thee.

(Sung at the same time as the above.)

Thou art my GOD, Almighty LORD;
I know by Thy unchanging word,
Thine is a Father's heart.

Yet I, though dust, for comfort flee,
And find it while I cleave to Thee.

O JESU, Son of GOD, I raise
My voice to Thee in hymns of praise,
For Thy redeeming grace;

Increase my faith, and strengthen me,
That I may pray and cleave to Thee!
