(No. of Lots, 560; amount realised, £589 9s. 9d.) [NOTE. Sir Walter Besant's library, though catalogued under a comparatively small number of entries, consisted of a great many books, of useful rather than marketable interest. These were nearly all made up into "parcels" and disposed of for small sums; but in any case are not reported here, as the amounts realised under such circumstances would be no guide to the value of individual works. Some surprise has been expressed at the smallness of the prices realised for the original autograph manuscripts of Sir Walter Besant's novels, which he wrote either singly or in collaboration with Mr. Rice. Contrary to what might have reasonably been expected, these brought quite trifling sums. The following report includes all the books and manuscripts disposed of at this sale which are of interest from the special point of view of BookPRICES CURRENT.--ED.] (a) Original Autograph Manuscripts, enclosed in drop cases 3250 The Rebel Queen (257) £4 5s. 3251 For Faith and Freedom (259) £5 55. 3252 The Orange Girl (261) £5 2s. 6d. 3253 The World went very well then (262) £4 55. 3254 Herr Paulus (263) £4 6s. 3255 The Bell of St. Paul's (264) £55s. 3256 The Ivory Gate (265) £4 6s. 3257 The Chaplain of the Fleet (272) £5 5s. 3258 City of Refuge (273) £4 8s. 3259 Beyond the Dreams of Avarice (274) £4 10S. 3260 The Master Craftsman (277) £4 10s. 3264 Freeman (Edward A.)
