THE 'HE present Catalogue comprises 322 items, all carefully selected either for their great rarity, or for their intrinsic value and interest. Particular attention may be directed to the beautiful XVth century Manuscript Horæ, almost certainly the work of the Tongres Abbey Scriptorium; the original unpublished manuscript of a work by George North, c. 1576; Admiral Rodney's own Log Book, from 22 Nov. 1779 to 16 Nov. 1780 and the original MS. of Settle's "Triumph of London" for 1706. Amongst incunabula are the catalogue of books printed by Gunther Zainer, of Augsburg, about 1473; a remarkably fine copy of the Nuremburg Chronicle, 1493; Brandt's Stultifera Navis, first edition, 1497 and other examples of rare early presses, several with woodcuts. Old English Literature includes Boccaccio's Fall of Princes, printed by Pynson in 1527; fine copies of Spenser's Faerie Queen, 1596, and his Colin Clout, 1595; the uncut copy of Pantagruel's Prognostication by Rabelais; the only known copy of Euphues and his England, dated 1601; the Bishop's Bible, 1568; plays and poems by Brome, Chapman, Dekker, Drayton, Harvey, Milton, Nabbes, Rowley, Shakespeare, Sherburne, Shirley, Sidney, Suckling, Taylor, Vaughan, Waller, Warner, Webster, and others. There are excessively rare Sarum and cther Theological works, including the unknown fragment of a work printed by Wynkyn de Worde in 1527, fine bindings by Derome, Padeloup, Boyet, and other eminent masters, first editions of XVIIIth century authors, etc. Americana includes includes Hartlib's Reformed American Silk-worm; important historical documents and rare works relating to the different colonies. Under their respective headings will be found a number of rare early gardening, husbandry, medical and law books, as well as several very interesting presentation and association copies, including American Notes by Dickens, Robert Burton's copy of Sidney's Arcadia, 1613, and Walton's Lives, corrected and annotated by himself. The autographs embrace an Album Amicorum, with lines written by James I. and his wife, Anne of Denmark (No. 246); a most interesting letter from Queen Marie Antoinette to the Princess Lamballe and other French royal autographs. Collation A4 11., B to N4 in 6s; the pagination is very incorrect, and consequently the book is often catalogued as wanting A5 and 6, which never existed. Newlie 2 ALEXIS, OR ALESSIO OF PIEDMONT [pseud. for Girolamo Ruscelli ?] A very rare edition, containing the three books complete as translated by W. Ward (Physician and Translator, and Fellow of King's College, Cambridge), each with separate title, signatures, and pagination. Prof. Ferguson, in his paper on Books of Secrets (Bib. Soc. Trans., Vol XII., pp. 166-67), writes: It was the model which subsequent compilers followed, and was a reservoir of information which could be drawn on if required, so that in a way the book is one of the classics of the subject. It is a remarkable gathering, for though it is not devoid of many singular notions, disagreeable remedies, superstitious beliefs, all the more does it throw light on the state of knowledge and skill at the time, the demand there was for information and guidance, and the practical methods which must have been current."
