strange wives? Nehem. xiii. 24. 27. Take heed to your spirit, and let none deal "treacherously" (or unfaithfully") against the wife of his youth. Mal. ii. 15. The wife is bound by the law, as long as her husband liveth, but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will, only in the Lord. 1 Cor. vii. 39. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? 2 Cor. vi. 14. 16.

3 My spirit, &c.] And I will come down and talk with thee there (said God) and I will take of the spirit which is upon "thee" ("Moses"), and will put it upon "them" ("the seventy elders"). Numb. xi. 17. Yet many years didst thou (the Lord) "forbear" (or, protract over them"), and testifiedst against "them" ("the Israelites") by thy spirit. Neh. ix. 30. What could be done more unto my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Wherefore when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes. Isa. v. 4. But "they" ("the house of Israel") rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit. Therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. Isa. lxiii. 10. I earnestly protested unto your fathers, in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, obey my voice. Therefore, thus saith the Lord, behold I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them. Jer. xi. 7. 11. Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost. As your fathers did, so do Acts vii. 51. This I say, then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh, for the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. these are contrary the one to the other. v. 16, 17. Quench not the Spirit; despise not prophesyings. 1 Thess. v. 19, 20. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit, by which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited, in the days of Noe, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is eight souls, were saved by water. 1 Pet. iii. 18, 19, 20. Behold, the Lord cometh, with ten thousand of his saints, to execute judgment upon all. Jude 14, 15.

Is flesh, &c.] For he remembered that "they" ("mankind") were but flesh. Ps. lxxviii. 39. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh. John iii. 6. There is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Rom. viii. 1. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die. Rom. viii. 13. The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. They that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the "affections" (or "passions") and lusts. Gal. v. 17. 24. Christ suffered for sins, being put to death in the flesh. 1 Pet. iii. 18.

4 Giants in the earth, &c.] And there we saw giants (said the spies that went to search Canaan), the sons of Anak, which come of the giants. Numb. xiii. 33. "That" also ("the land of Ammon") was accounted a land of giants; giants dwelt therein in old time. people great and many, and tall as the Anakims; and the Ammonites called them Zam

zummims. Deut. ii. 20, 21. For only Og, king of Bashan, remained of the remnant of giants. Deut. iii. 11. And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 1 Sam. xvii. 4. And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons of the "giant," (or "Rapha") thought to have slain David. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant, &c. 2 Sam. xxi. 16. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22. See verse 3.

Men of renown, &c.] Let us build us a city, and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name. Gen. xi. 4. And "they" ("Korah, &c.") rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown. Numb. xvi. 2.

5 God saw that the wickedness, &c.] The men of Sodom were wicked, and sinners before the Lord exceedingly. Gen. xiii. 13. The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous. Gen. xviii. 20. The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt; they have done abominable works: there is none that doeth good. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord? Ps. xiv. 2. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand; that did seek God. Ps. liii. 2. They did not like "to retain" (or

"to acknowledge") God in their knowledge; God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents; without understanding, covenant-breakers, "without natural affection" (or "unsociable"), implacable, unmerciful: who, knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but "have pleasure in them" ("consent with them") that do them. Rom. i. 28, 29, 30, 31. Both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin: there is none righteous, no not one. There is none that understandeth: there is none that seek after God. They are all gone out of the way: they are together become unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood. Destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace have they not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Rom. iii. 9—19.

Imagination of the thoughts of his heart, &c.] The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. Gen. viii. 21. I shall have peace (saith he whose heart turneth away from God) though I walk in the "imagination" (or "stubbornness") of mine heart. Deut. xxix.

Behold he putteth no trust in his saints: the heavens are not clean in his (God's) sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water? Job xv. 16. An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations (doth the Lord hate). Prov. vi. 18. They" ("mankind") have sought out many inventions. Eccles. vii. 29. The heart of the sons of men is full of evil. Eccles. ix. 3. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Jer. xvii. 9. Behold the wicked abominations that they do here. Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? Ezek. viii. 9. 12. Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, &c. Matt. xv. 19. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts,

malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Titus iii. 3.

Thoughts, &c.] O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Jer. iv. 14.

6 Repented.] And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. Exod. xxxii. 14. God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent. Hath he said, and shall he not do it? or, hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Numb. xxiii. 19. For the Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants. Deut. xxxii. 36. It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. "The Strength of Israel" (or "the Eternity, or Victory of Israel") will not lie, nor repent; for he is not a man that he should repent. 1 Sam. xv. 11. 29. And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem, to destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; stay now thy hand. 2 Sam. xxiv. 16. And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it; and as he was destroying, the Lord beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough; stay now thine hand. 1 Chron. xxi. 15. And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented, according to the multitude of his mercies. Ps. cvi. 45. The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent. Ps. cx. 4. If that nation against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good wherewith I said I would benefit them. Jer. xviii. 8. 10. Did Hezekiah, king of Judah, put him (the prophet Micah) to death? Did he not fear the Lord, and besought the Lord, and the Lord repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against "them" ("the people of Judah"). Jer. xxvi. 19. How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? How shall I deliver thee, Israel? Mine heart is turned within me my repentings are kindled together. Hosea xi. 8. And God saw "their" works ("of the people of Nineveh"), that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil that he said he would do

It grieved him, &c.] Oh that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always; that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever. Deut. v. 29. Oh that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end. Deut. xxxii. 29. How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert? Ps. lxxviii. 40. Oh that my people had hearkened to me, and Israel had walked in my ways. Ps. lxxxi. 13. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation. Ps. xcv. 10. I beheld the transgressors and was grieved. Ps. cxix. 158. Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments, then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteous ness as the waves of the sea. Isa. xlviii. 18. But they rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit. Isa. Ixiii. 10. As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked. Ezek. xxxiiii. 11. And he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, if thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace, but now they are hid from thine eyes. Luke xix. 41, 42. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph. iv. 30. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, they do always err in their heart, and they have not known my ways. But with whom was he grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had sinned? Heb. iii. 10. 17.

7 I will destroy, &c.] The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein; for he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Ps. xxiv. 1, 2. The wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. Ps. xxxvii. 20. The fear of the Lord prolongeth days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. Prov. x. 27. The Lord hath made all things for himself; yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. Prov. xvi. 4. Both man and beast.] My people is foolish, they have not known me: they are sottish children, and they have none understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. The whole land shall

be desolate. Jer. iv. 22. 27. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter. How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? The beasts are consumed, and the birds. Jer. xii. 3, 4. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven. Hosea iv. 3. I will consume man and beast: I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea: and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the Lord. Zeph. i. 3. By the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for there is no difference. Rom. iii. 20. 22.

8 Found grace, &c.] Behold now, thy "servant" ("Lot") hath found grace in thy sight. Gen. xix. 19. And Moses said unto the Lord, see, thou sayest unto me, thou hast found grace in my sight. And the Lord said unto Moses, thou hast found grace in my sight. Exod. xxxiii. 12. 17. The Lord will give grace and glory. Ps. lxxxiv. 11. The Lord preserveth all them that love him. Ps. cxlv. 20. So shalt thou (if merciful and true) find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Prov. iii. 4. For whoso findeth "me" (" wisdom"), findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord. Prov. viii. 35. A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord. Prov. xii. 2. The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness, even Israel. Jer. xxxi. 2. Fear not Mary (saith the angel), for thou hast found favour with God. Luke i. 30. (David) who found favour before God, desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. Acts vii. 46. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. Rom. iv. 4. And if by grace, then is it no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace; but if it be of works, then is it no more grace. Rom. xi. 6. But by the grace of God I am what I am (saith Paul), and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Cor. xv. 10. When it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen, immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood. Gal. i. 15, 16. The Lord grant unto him (Onesiphorus) that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day. 2 Tim. i. 18. For the grace of God, "that bringeth salvation, hath

appeared to all men," (or "that bringeth salvation, to all men hath appeared"). Titus ii. 11. Being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus iii. 7. Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Heb. iv. 16. And (God) spared not the old world, but saved Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness. 2 Pet. ii. 5.

9 The generations, &c.] See chap. ii. 4. and chap. v. 1. Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah; Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and unto them were sons born, after the flood. Gen. x. 1.

to scorn.

A just man, &c.] For thee (Noah) have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Gen. vii. 1. The just, upright man, is laughed Job xii. 4. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Prov. iv. 18. For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not. Eccles. vii. 20. Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it (the land that sinneth), they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord God. Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter: they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness. Ezek. xiv. 14. 20. Behold, his soul which is lifted up, is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. Hab. ii. 4. And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just, and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was upon him. Luke ii. 25. And behold there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just. Luke xxiii. 50. And they (the men sent by Cornelius) said, Cornelius, the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report, was warned from God, &c. Acts x. 22. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed, from faith to faith, as it is written, the just shall live by faith. Rom. i. 17. That no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident; for the just shall live by faith. Gal. iii. 11. By the "which" ("preparing an ark") he (Noah) condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. Heb. xi. 7. (God) saved Noah, a preacher of righteousness. 2 Pet. ii. 5.

Perfect in his generations, &c.] (Or "upright"). The heart of Asa was perfect, all his days. 2 Chron. xv. 17. And he (Ama

ziah) did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. 2 Chron. xxv. 2. "That man" ("Job") was perfect, and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. And the Lord said unto Satan, hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect, and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil. Job. i. 1. 8. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. Ps. xxxvii. 37. And "they" ("Zacharias and Elizabeth”) were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Luke i. 6. I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, that I may win Christ, and be found in him; not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded. Phil. iii. 8. 15.

Noah walked with God, &c.] See chap. v. 22. 24. And (God) said unto him (Abram), I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou "perfect" (or "upright"). Gen. xvii. 1. And he (Israel) blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, did walk, bless the lads. Gen. xlviii. 15. "Thou" ("the Lord") hast shewed unto thy servant David, my father (said Solomon) great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in uprightness of heart, with thee. 1 Kings iii. 6. Luke i. 6. and 2 Pet. ii. 5. preced. com.

11. Before God, &c.] And the Lord said unto Noah, come thou, and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me, in this generation. Gen. vii. 1. And "he" ("Nimrod") was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Gen. x. 9. The men of Sodom were wicked, and sinners before the Lord. Gen. xiii. 13. Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the Lord. 2 Chron. xxxiv. 27. See Luke i. 6. above. For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Rom. ii. 13. Now we know, that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become "guilty before God" (or “subject to the judgment of God"). Rom. iii. 19.

Filled with violence, &c.] The wicked, and him that loveth violence, his (the Lord's) soul hateth. Ps. xi. 5. Destroy, O Lord, and

divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Ps. lv. 9. Let not an "evil speaker" (or a man of tongue") be established in the earth; evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him. Ps. cxl. 11. Violence shall no more be heard in thy land; wasting nor destruction within "thy" borders ("the city of the Lord"). Isa. Ix. 18. Violence and spoil is heard in "her" (“Judah”). Jer. vi. 7. “They" (" Idolaters") have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger. Ezek. viii. 17. By the multitude of thy merchandise, they have filled the midst of "thee" ("Tyrus") with violence; and thou hast sinned, therefore I will cast thee, as profane, out of the mountain of God. Ezek. xxviii. 16. Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel; for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land (of Israel). By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Hosea iv. 1, 2. O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save? Hab. i. 2. Because thou (Chaldea) hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. Hab. ii. 8. 17.

12 Looked upon the earth, &c.] See verse 8. And the Lord said, I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me. Gen. xviii. 21. He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not, he will deliver his soul. Job xxxiii. 27, 28. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand and seek God. Ps. xiv. 2. The Lord looketh from heaven, he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. Ps. xxxiii. 13, 14. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Ps. liii. 2. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Prov. xv. iii.

All flesh had corrupted.] See verses 4,5. Thee have I seen (Noah) righteous before me, in this generation. And all flesh died that moved

upon the earth. Gen. vii. 1. 21. And God said, this is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God, and every living creature of all flesh, that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, this is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me, and all flesh that is upon the earth. Gen. ix. 12. 16, 17. Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? which said unto God, depart from us; and what can the Almighty do "for them" (or "to them"). Job xxii. 15. 17. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Luke iii. 6. By which also "he" ("Jesus") went and preached unto the spirits in prison, which sometime were disobedient. 1 Pet. iii. 19, 20. (God) spared not the old world, but saved Noe the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. 2 Pet. ii. 5.

13 The end of all flesh, &c.] O "thou" (Babylon) that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness. Jer. li. 13. Now is the end come upon thee (Israel). An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land. Ezek. vii. 2, 3. An end is come, the end is come, it watcheth for thee; behold it is come. Ezek. vii. 6. The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more. Amos viii. 2. But the end of all things is at hand; be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 1 Pet. iv. 7.

Filled with violence, &c.] See verse 4. 11, 12. Simeon and Levi are brethren, instruments of cruelty are in their habitations (or "their swords are weapons of violence"). Gen. xlix. 5.

With the earth, &c.] See chap. vii. 23. I beheld the earth, and lo it was without form and void, and the heavens, and they had no light. For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken of it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it. Jer. iv. 23. 28. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house, by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. Heb. xi. 7. "Whereby" ("by the word of God") the world that then was, being overflowed with water perished; but the heavens, and the earth which are now, by
