but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. And 11 God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and 12 Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. And God went up from him in the place where he 13 talked with him. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where 14 he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drinkoffering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. And Jacob called 15 the name of the place where God spake with him, Beth-el. And 16 they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. nances, or after the law and commandment Lord came down to see the city and the which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel. 2 Ki. xvii. 34.

11 God Almighty.] I am the Almighty God (said the Lord to Abraham); walk before me, and be thou perfect. Ge. xvii. 1. Is any thing too hard for the Lord ? Ge. xviii. 14. And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz, in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, and said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and will multiply thee, and will make of thee a multitude of people. Ge. xlviii. 3, 4. I appeared (saith the Lord) unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty: but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them. Ex. vi. 3. And I will be a Father unto you, and "ye" ("true believers") shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 2 Co. vi. 18.

A nation and a company, &c.] See chap. xii. 2. and com. I will establish my covenant between me and "thee" (" Abraham"), and thy seed after thee in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will bless "her" ("Sarah"), and give thee a son also of her and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. Ge. xvii. 7. 16. God Almighty give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee (said Isaac); that "thou" ("Jacob") mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham. Ge. xxviii. 4. Thou saidst (0 God, said Jacob), I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. Ge. xxxii. 12. Jacob said unto Joseph (God) said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and I will make of thee a multitude of people. Ge. xlviii. 4. See Nu. i. and xxvi. 1 Sa. to 2 Chr. throughout.

12 The land which I gave, &e.] See chap. xii. 7; xiii. 14, 15. 17. and com.; xxvi. 3, 4; xxviii. 3-13; xlviii. 4. Jos. vi. and xxvi. throughout. And the

tower, which the children of men builded. Ge. xi. 5. And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. Ge. xvii. 22. And the Lord went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham. Ge. xviii. 33. "Then" ("after consuming the burnt offering with fire from heaven") the angel of the Lord departed out of his (Gideon's) sight. Ju. vi. 21. When the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar (on which Manoah the father of Samson had offered a kid), the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar. Ju. xiii. 20. And "their" ("the disciples") eyes were opened, and they knew "him" ("Jesus"), and he vanished out of their sight. Lu. xxiv. 31.

14 Set up a pillar, &c.] And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel unto this day. Ge. xxxv. 20. See chap. xxviii. 18, 19. and com. And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi. Ex. xvii. 15.

16 A little way.] And he (Elisha) said unto him (Naaman), Go in peace: so he departed from him a little way. 2 Ki. v. 19.

Ephrath.] And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Beth-lehem. Ge. xlviii. 7. A certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab: and the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilon, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah. Ru. i. 2. And when Azubah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur. 1 Ch. ii. 19. Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found "it" ("a place for the Lord")_in the fields of the wood. Ps. cxxxii. 6. thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Judæa, in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem (seeking him that was born king of the Jews). Mat. ii. 1. When he (Herod) saw that he was mocked of the wise men, he sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem. In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. Mat. ii. 16. 18.

17 Hard labour.] Unto the woman "he" (“God") said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow, and thy conception: in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children. Ge. iii. 16. Notwithstanding, she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith, and charity, and holiness, with sobriety. 1 Ti. ii. 15.

Fear not, &c.] And "she" ("Rachel") called "his" name ("her first son") Joseph, and said, The Lord shall add to me another san. Ge. xxx. 24. And his (Eli's) daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed, for her pains came upon her and she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel. 1 Sa. iv. 19. 21.

18 Her soul was in departing.] And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said unto Jacob, Give me children or else I die. Ge. xxx. 1. And about the time of her death (Phinehas' wife, the daughter in law of Eli the priest), the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not, for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it: and she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel, because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband (who were dead). 1 Sa. iv. 20, 21. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Ps. xvi. 10. Then shall the dust return to the earth, as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Ec. xii. 7. "They" ("of Jerusalem") say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? When they swooned, as the wounded, in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mother's bosom. La. ii. 12. Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou

hast provided? Lu. xii. 20. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus he gave up the ghost. L. xxiii. 46. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Ac. vii. 59.

Ben-oni.] Jabez was more honourable than his brethren; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 1 Ch. iv. 9.

Benjamin.] But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him. And he (Jacob) said (to Reuben), My son shall not go down with you; for his brother (Joseph) is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. Ge. xlii. 4. 38. God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin; if I be bereaved of my chil dren, I am bereaved. Ge. xliii. 14. Thy servant, my father (said Judah to Joseph) said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons, and the one went out from me, and I saw him not since: and if ye take this also from me, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. Now therefore, when I come to thy servant, my father, and the lad be not with us (seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's) (Benjamin's) life, he will die. Ge. xliv. 27. 31. Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upou the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself. Ps. lxxx. 17.

19 Rachel died.] Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way (said Jacob to Joseph), when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: the same is Bethlehem. Ge. xlviii. 7.

Ephrath.] (Of the lot of Zebulun), Kattah, and Nahallal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Beth-lehem, &c. Jos. xix. 15. See verse 16. and com. And get thee riches and power: do thou worthily in Ephratah (said the people and elders to Boaz), and be famous in Bethlehem. Ru. iv. 11.

20 The pillar of Rachel's grave.] See verse 9. 14. When thou (said Samuel to Sa art departed from me to day, then thou stak find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah, &c. 1 Sa x. 2. And they took Absalom, and cast him

And 27 Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him. Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale, for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called unto this day Absalom's place. 2 Sa. xviii. 17, 18.

21 The tower of Edar.] And thou, O tower of the flock (the church of Christ), the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion: the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem. Mi. iv. 8. And there was in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. Lu. ii. 8.

22 Lay with Bilhah, &c.] Reuben (said Jacob), thou art unstable as water: thou shalt not excel, because thou wentest up to thy father's bed. Ge. xlix. 4. The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness. Le. xviii. 8. Forasmuch as he (Ruben) defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright. 1 Ch. v. 1. It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles that one should have his father's wife.

Now the sons, &c.] See De. xxxiii. throughout; Jos. xiii. xxi. throughout. These are the sons of Israel; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 1 Ch. ii. 1, 2. See 1 Ch. xii. 23-40. xxvii. 16-22. Ezr. xlviii. throughout. Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day, and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve Patriarchs. Ac. vii. 8. I heard the number of them that were sealed, and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel, &c. &c. Re. vii. 4-8. And the wall of the city (the new Jerusalem) had twelve foundations, and in them the

27 Jacob came unto Isaac, &c.] Now, therefore, my son, obey my voice, and arise, flee thou (Jacob) to Laban, "my" ("Rebekah's") brother, to Haran, and tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's (Esau's) anger turn away from thee. Then I will send and fetch thee from thence. Ge. xxvii. 43-45. And Isaac sent away Jacob, and he went to Padan-aram, unto Laban, son of Bethuel, the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother. Ge. xxviii. 5.

Mamre.] See chap. xiii. 18, and com. unto Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. Jos. xv. 13. And "they" ("the children of Israel”) gave "them" (the "Levites") the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah. Jos. xxi. 11. And David said (to the Lord), Whither shall I go up? and he said, Unto Hebron. 2 Sa. ii. 1. So David went up thither, and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. And the time that David was king in Hebron, over the house of Judah, was seven years and six months. 2 Sa. ii. 3. 11. Then came all the tribes of Israel to David, unto Hebron; so all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron. And king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel; in Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned

28 And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. 29 And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

CHAPTER XXXVI.

1 Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. Esau 2 took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the 3 daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; And Bashemath Ishmael's daugh4 ter, sister of Nebajoth. And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and 5 Bashemath bare Reuel; And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam,

28 An hundred and fourscore years, &c.] These are the days of the years of Abraham's life, which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. Ge. xxv. 7. And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred and forty and seven years. Ge. xlvii. 28. So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old. Ge. 1. 26.

29 Gave up the ghost.] Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Ge. iii. 19. Thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. Ge. xv. 15. And Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age (having lived an hundred and threescore years), an old man, and full of years. And these are the years of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years, and he gave up the ghost and died. Ge. xxv. 8. 17. When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he said (unto Esau), Behold now I am old, I know not the day of my death, Ge. xxvii. 1, 2. And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost. Ge. xlix. 33. Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season. Job v. 26. Man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Ec. xii. 5. 7.

His sons Esau and Jacob, &c.] Abraham buried his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah: and the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the sons of Heth. Ge. xxiii. 19, 20. The days of mourning for my father (Isaac) are at hand (said Esau). Ge. xxvii. 41.

CHAP. XXXVI.-1 Generations, &c.] In blessing I will bless "thee" (“Abraham");

and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore. Ge. xxii. 17. See Ge. xxv. 24-34; xxvii. 35–41; xxxii. 3-7. And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: thus saith thy brother Israel, Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border; let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country. And Edom said, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword. And the children of Israel

said unto him, We will go by the high way; and he said, Thou shalt not go through. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him. Nu. xx. 14-24. Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother. De. xxiii. 7. The sons of Esau; Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah. 1 Ch. i. 35. Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. Is. lxiii. 1. Thus saith the Lord God, Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended and revenged himself upon them: therefore, I will also stretch out my hand upon Edom. Ez. xxP. 12, 13.

Ge.

2 Took his wives, &c.] And "he" (“Noah") said, Cursed be Canaan (the son of Ham, who saw the nakedness of his father); a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. ix. 25. And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah. Ge. xxvi. 34, 35. See Ge. xxvii. 46.

Adah.] See chap. xxvi. 34.

Aholibamah.] And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah. Ge. xxxvi. 25. See chap. xxvi. 34, &c. 3 See chap. xxv. 13. and xxviii. 9.

and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan. And Esau took his wives, and his 6 sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob. For their riches were more than that they 7 might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle. Thus dwelt Esau in 8 mount Seir: Esau is Edom. And these are the generations of 9 Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir: These are the 10 names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau. And the sons of 11 Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz. And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare 12 to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife. And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, 13 and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife. And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the 14 daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah. These were dukes of the sons of Esau: 15

5 In the land of Canaan.] See verse 6, and chap. xxxv. 29.

6 Persons of his house.] Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy merchants (Tyre). They traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market. Ex. xxvii. 13. No man buyeth "her" ("Babylon's") merchandise any more; of cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, &c. &c. and slaves, and souls of men. Re. xviii. 13.

Went into the country.] And the land was not able to bear them that they might dwell together, for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And "they" (“Abram and Lot") separated the one from the other. Ge. xiii. 6. 11. I will give unto thee, and thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger. Ge. xvii. 8. and xxviii. 4. And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. Ge. xxxii. 3.

8 Mount Seir.] These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land, &c. &c. Ge. xxxvi. 20. xiv. 7. and xxxii. 3, and com. Some of them (who sought pasture for their flocks), even of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went to mount Seir. 1 Ch. iv. 42. Now, behold, the children of Ammon, and Moab, and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt. The children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them.

And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. (Having attacked Judah, they were overthrown by Jehoshaphat.) 2 Ch. xx. 10. 23. Son of man, set thy face against mount Seir, and prophesy against it. Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel, I will prepare thee unto blood, even blood shall pursue thee. Thus will I make mount Seir most desolate, and cut off from it him that passeth out, and him that returneth. Ez. xxxv. 2. 5. 7. I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste, for the dragons of the wilderness. Mal. i. 3.

Esau is Edom.] See verse 1.

9 The Edomites.] The firstborn (of Lot's daughters) bare a son, and called his name Moab; the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. Ge. xix. 37.

10 Eliphaz, &c.] See verse 3, 4. The sons of Esau; Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah. 1 Ch. i. 35. 11 Zepho.] See verse 15, 16. The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek. 1 Ch. i. 36. See last com.

12 Timna.] The children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan's sister was Timna. Ge. xxxvi. 22. See preced. com.
