THE arrangement of the first volume of AMERICAN Book
1 PRICES CURRENT (which was modelled almost exactly upon the English compilation of the same name) was chronological by sales, necessitating a reference to the Index for every lot consulted. In the present volume, all sales of the same book are grouped together, and the whole is thrown into one alphabetical arrangement, the autographs forming a second alphabet.
The chronological arrangement, in which the books of one sale are grouped together, gives a better idea of the character of the collections sold, and this, to a limited extent, is a help toward estimating the true market value of any book. But the obvious advantage of having all copies of the same book together, where the eye can at once run from one quotation to another, and compare condition and price, more than compensates for losing sight of the characteristics of each sale as a whole. The trouble and annoyance of constantly referring to the Index is also avoided.
As will be seen, the arrangement in the alphabet is by author, where the author is known. Where the author is unknown, the book will usually be found under the first important word of title. Some books, principally anonymously published histories and biographies, are entered under the subject, and a few books, bound for famous persons, have been inserted under the names of their former owners. Publications and Transactions of Clubs and Societies will be found, usually, under the name of the Society, but sometimes under the name of the State or city in which the Society is located, or more rarely under the author of the book. Newspapers and periodicals may usually be found by title ; a few, better known as the work of their editor, will be found under his name.
Different books by the same author are, for the most part, arranged alphabetically under the author, by the first important word of the title. Different editions of the same book are arranged
