and acceptable duty in giving to the peculiar facts which his late fituation has brought to his knowledge, as extenfive a circulation as poffible.

Should it be objected that he ought to have verified the narrative by the introduction of a greater number of anecdotes and names, he begs to obferve that he has been compelled to generalize the ftatement, left he should expofe the parties alluded to on the feveral topics, and even their remote connections, to the inquifitorial tyranny of the Police of Paris,

. For the fame reafon he is obliged to con ceal his own name from the public; for although he made his escape unaffifted by his friends in France, and even without their privity, he might otherwife fubject every body who knew him there to unmerited

perfecution. His Publisher has liberty to communicate his name on any well-founded application from perfons of weight or authority...

A SHORT and authentic view of the fituation of France must be interefting to the people of this country, at a moment when the anxious policy of Bonaparte, and the circumftances of the war, render it very difficult to obtain any correct account of 'the internal condition of our neighbours on the continent.

It will not be thought improper by thofe who perufe this Sketch throughout, that it commences with Bonaparte and his government; as it is the misfortune of France at this moment to have no character as a nation, and to have become in his hands the
