Sir

I should give no offence to any of my readers if I should dedicate my work to one who is universably acknowledged as one of the best men amidst the generations of the 19th Century.

Candour and openness of heart, as also an ardent passion for knowledge and love of truth, have always characterised your life, and these I assure you will exact the high esteem of all who have the honor to know you.

Nothing shall exceed my gladness to observe here that you possess that moderation in a high fortune, and that affability of manners, which are so conspicuous through all parts of your life, & which cannot fail to be remarked by your most casual visitants, while those who cultivate your acquaintance find in you the most agreeable companion. In short you have exhibited yourself to the world.

"As one in suffering all, who suffers nothing ;"
"A man, who fortune's buffets and rewards "
"Has ta'en with equal thanks"

For my own part, Sir, familiarly connected with you as I have been, for a long time, I have no other desire than to be able to express my gratitude to you, for the assistance which you have promised to afford in the publication of my work; and that I am with utmost gratitude for

all

your favors.

With a view to render my humble services I was induced on the month of January of the year in question to undertake the composition of a work for assisting those youths who are not able to read Shakspeare, but unforeseen accidents frustrated the execution of my design and disheartened me from pursuing the object any further.

It was on the 26th August 1862 that I pubmy dramatic work on the First Part of the Life and Death of Hector and I must confess that
