TO THE PUBLIC.
Being established permanently in the business of circu lating Books by Traveling Agents solely, I have adopted these as my rules:
1st. To dispose of of my my Books only through my own Agents, and not through Booksellers or Peddlers, as thereby I secure uniformity of prices.
2d. To obligate my Agents by a written contract not to sell any of my publications for less than their regular prices.
3d. To furnish to Subscribers, Books in every respect fully equal to the sample copies.
4th. Not to reduce the price of my Books after their first issue.
To show my observance of these rules thus far, and as an earnest of my future intentions, I here state, that I have not allowed my Work on Ohio-the first edition of which was issued ten years since-to be placed for sale in a sinle Bookstore in the Union, nor sold for less than the original price of Three Dollars per copy.
It is my desire, that whomsoever may read this, or any of my publications, should recollect the name of the publisher, as it is my intention that it shall never be attached to any work that will not be generally valued, far beyond its mere money cost, by such families as may possess it. That I have thus far succeeded in my efforts, is evinced by the greatly increased sales of my Books in those comm 12 nities where the reputation of the publisher has been established by former purchases.
It shall be my endeavor to continue the publication of none but Books of decided merit, and to conduct my business in a systematic, honorable manner; all of which, aside from the pleasure it is certain to confer, will result in the generous patronage of an appreciating public.
