Or,

ALL is o'er, the pain, the sorrow,

Human taunts and fiendish spite:
Death shall be despoil'd to-morrow
Of the prey he grasps to-night:
Yet once more, to seal his doom,
Christ must sleep within the tomb.
Close and still the cell that holds him,
While in brief repose he lies;
Deep the slumber that enfolds him,
Veil'd awhile from mortal eyes:
Slumber, such as needs must be,
After hard-won victory.

Fierce and deadly was the anguish,
Which on yonder cross he bore;
How did soul and body languish,
Till the toil of death was o'er !
But that toil, so fierce and dread,
Bruised and crush'd the serpent's head.
All night long, with plaintive voicing,
Chant his requiem soft and low;
Loftier strains of loud rejoicing

From to-morrow's harps shall flow:
"Death and hell at length are slain,

"Christ hath triumph'd, Christ doth reign'!

Hallelujah. Amen."

Collects and Prayers.

(All kneeling, and the Person Officiating first saying, Let

us pray.)

I.- -COLLECT OF THE MORROW.

II.—FOR THE RIGHT USE OF THE LORD'S DAY.

MOS

OST Gracious God, who hast given us the night for the repose of our bodies, and

holy seasons for the refreshment of the soul; Teach us, we beseech thee, so to employ thy sacred day in thy worship and service, as to prepare for that rest, where we shall day and night, without ceasing, offer unto thee the sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving, to the glory of thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

III.-INTERCESSION.

E call to mind, O God, before thy throne of grace, all who are near and dear to us, and all for whom we are bound to pray, beseeching thee to remember them for good, and to supply, as may be most expedient for them, all their desires and wants. And to commend to thy mercy all who have wronged us, whether by word or deed, beseeching thee to forgive them all their sins, and to bring them together with us to thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

IV.—-COMMENDATORY.

ACCEPT, O merciful Father, our sacrifice of

praise and thanksgiving, for all the mercies of the past week, and of our past lives. To thee we owe all we are, and all we have; and we beseech thee to keep us this night in safety under the shadow of thy wings, and so to prepare us, both in soul and body, for the duties of the Lord's day, that we may sanctify it by a holy

rest, and may rise with Christ to-morrow unto newness of life; through him who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIN

Or this.

INALLY, O Lord, we beseech thee to be within us to strengthen us, without us to watch us, above us to protect us, beneath us to support us, before us to conduct us, behind us to recall us, round about us to fortify us; that we, being saved and defended in all dangers ghostly and bodily, and being kept from all sin and wickedness, and from our ghostly enemy, and from everlasting death, may diligently serve thee here with a meek and quiet spirit, and receive the inheritance of everlasting rest and peace in thy kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIN

Or else this.

INALLY, O Lord, we beseech thee of thy great goodness to accept our praises and thanksgivings for all thy faithful servants, who, having witnessed in their lives a good confession, have left the light of their good works to shine before thy Church on earth; and mercifully grant that we, being compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, may lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and may run with patience the race that is

set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; that so departing this life with the seal of faith, we may attain unto the resurrection of the just, and with them may have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Benediction.

THE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.

[Or, if no Priest is present.]

I offend not in my tongue.

M. I held my tongue and spake nothing: I kept silence, yea, even from good words; but it was pain and grief to me.
