The Domesday Book is the most ancient record in the kingdom, and the register from which judgment was to be given upon the value, tenure, and services of the lands therein described. It was made in consequence of a survey ordered by William the Conqueror, and completed in 1086. Hume calls it the most valuable piece of antiquity possessed by any nation. The original Manuscript of pages 326*, 327*, containing Exon Domesday, having been lent at a very early period, and considered lost long before the book was printed, they are deficient in all the original copies: but having of late years been fortunately recovered by W.C.
