To thee, Father, he ascends,
There, where sorrows cease to grieve us,
He will to Himself receive us,
One in thee, our Father, friend.

HE

PSALM CII. I, 2.

F. MENDELSOHN BARTHOLDY.

EAR my prayer, O Lord: and let my crying come unto thee.

Hide not thy face from me in the time of my trouble; incline thine ear unto me when I call; O hear me, and that right soon.

O

PSALM CIII. 21; CXIII. 2; CXV. I. PRAISE the Lord, all ye hosts: ye servants of his that do his pleasure.

Blessed be the name of the Lord: from this time forth for evermore.

Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give the praise: for thy loving mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

Hymns.

FOR ADVENT.

DR. CROTCH.

BISHOP HEBER.

H, Saviour, is thy promise fled? Nor longer might thy grace endure, To heal the sick and raise the dead, And preach Thy Gospel to the poor? Come, Jesus! come! return again; With brighter beam Thy servants bless, Who long to feel Thy perfect reign, And share Thy kingdom's happiness. A feeble race, by passion driven,

In darkness and in doubt we roam, And lift our anxious eyes to Heaven, Our hope, our harbour, and our home. Come, Jesus! come! and as of yore The prophet went to clear Thy way, A harbinger Thy feet before,

A dawning to Thy brighter day,

So now may grace, with heavenly shower,
Our stony hearts for truth prepare;
Sow in our souls the seed of power,
Then come and reap Thy harvest there!

FOR CHRISTMAS.

ARK, the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King,
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With th' angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Hark, the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King.
Christ by highest heaven adored,
Christ the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb :
Veil'd in flesh the Godhead he,
Hail th' incarnate Deity:
Pleased as man with man appear,
Jesus our Immanuel here.

Hark, the herald, &c.

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,

Risen with healing in his wings :
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die:
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark, the herald, &c.

DESTE fideles, læti triumphantes,
Venite, Venite, in Bethlehem:

Natum videte Regem Angelorum:
Venite adoremus Dominum.

Deum de Deo, Lumen de Lumine,
Gestant puellæ viscera :

Deum verum, genitum non factum :
Venite adoremus Dominum.

Cantet nunc Io, chorus angelorum;
Cantet nunc aula cælestium,
Gloria in excelsis Deo :

Venite adoremus Dominum.

Ergo qui natus es die hodierna,

Jesu tibi sit gloria:

Patris eterni Verbum caro factum;

RIGHTEST and best of the sons of the

morning!

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid! Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid'

Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining,
Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall;
Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch, and Saviour of all!

Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom and offerings divine?
Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?

Vainly we offer each ample oblation;
Vainly with gifts would his favour secure :
Richer by far is the heart's adoration :
Dearer to God are the prayers of the

poor.
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid!
Star of the East, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!
Adapted from Mozart.

JES

FOR EASTER.

ESUS Christ is risen to-day,
Our triumphant holy-day;
Who did once, upon the cross,
Suffer to redeem our loss.

Hallelujah.

Hymns of praise then let us sing
Unto Christ our heavenly King,
Who endured the cross and grave,
Sinners to redeem and save.

Hallelujah.
