PREFACE.

THE increasing taste for Saxon literature rendering
it desirable that those works which contain the
purest specimens of the language of our forefathers
should be made accessible to every student, I have
been induced to complete that which was so ably
commenced by J. S. Cardale, Esq.; but, at the
same time, I cannot avoid expressing my unfeigned
regret, that this portion of the work did not fall
into those hands, which proved their competency
to the task, by the publication of a correct and
elegant edition of the prose part of King Alfred's
version of Boethius.
The only complete printed edition of the Anglo-
Saxon version of the Metres of Boethius is that of
