Amfterdam, May 28,

BOUT two o'clock this day the following account was received from the Hague: Yefterday at a general review feveral loaded arms were discharged from the Swifs corps. The great favourite, the Duke of Wolfenbuttle, received a fhot through the heel of his fhoe. A captain of the guards is dangerously wounded, and many perfons on the field were hurt. His Highnefs the Prince of Orange got off in a precipitate manner. We are waiting for more particulars, before we shall be able to judge about the caufe of this mifchief.

Monday, June 3. Though we have lately fuffered the French Ainbaffador and his attendants to vifit our dock-yards, a correfpondent obferves, that in March 1770, when an English Eaft-Indiaman, having loft her mafts off Ufhant, fteered into the road of Breft to refit, the intendant of the marine fent a meffage, charging the crew not to come on fhore; the officers indeed were permitted, but fo cautious were the French, that they conducted them by the back wall of the Fortress to Louverois, a town about twelve miles off, where they continued for five weeks, under the ftricteft infpection: In the mean time the fhip was fupplied, and being fit for fea, the officers were brought to town, to a coffee-houfe near the Elplanade, where the Swifs regiment was excicifed for their entertainment; after this they were conducted on board their fhip, but not till it was dark, and a fair win fpringing up, they set fail the next morning.

It is faid the ceremony of installation at Windfor will be performed immediately after the arrival of the Prince of Mecklenburgh, who is to be invefted with the order of the garter, and is expected in London about Auguft.

The following fingular circumftance happened lately at a church in the city: -A couple being there to be married, when the clergyman came to thefe words in the ceremony, "With my body I thee worship," the man ftopped fhort, and begged an explanation of that fentence: Such a question being rather unexpected, the pricft was at a lots to reply; but he bethought himself it was near the hour of twelve, an i told the enquirer he had not time to explain it: "Then (re

plied the intended bridegroom) I shall call when you are more at leifure, as I do not chufe to take a folemn vow to perform any thing which I do not underitand."

Betts were laid on Saturday at a house in Pall-mall, that preis warrants would be iffued before the expiration of a fortnight.

Foreign and Domeftic Intelligence,

Yesterday died at his houfe at Bromley, by Bow, Richard Cooper, Efq.

Birmingham, June 1. There is lately finished, by a lady of this town, a portrait of his Majefty, in needle-work,allow. ed by the connoiffeurs to be the greatest curiofity ever feen of the kind, being the clofeft likeness of his Majefty, and fo highly finished, that it has all the foftnefs and effect of painting.

Friday, June 7. Yesterday morning at half an hour paft four o'clock, when her Majefty was taken in labour, notice was immediately fent to her Royal Highnefs the Princefs Dowager of Wales, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Secretaries of State, and the ladies of the bedchamber; and a little before fix o'clock her Majefty was fafely delivered of a prince.

An exprefs is arrived from the Princefs of Bruniwick, to fignify that her ferene highness will not be able to vifit England this fummer, as her highnefs is far advanced in her pregnancy, and has been fo much indifpofed that it is deemed by her phyficians improper for her to take fuch a journey.

The beginning of last month there arrived at the court of Madrid no fewer than ten expreffes, from Verfailles in one day.

The king was fent for from his palace about 20 miles from Madrid, and the grand council continued fitting all day. The next morning a report was current through Madrid, that his Catholic Majelty gave orders for fifteen thousand infantry, and four thousand horse, to prepare themselves for fetting out for France with the utmost expedition, to prevent a revolution in that kingdom.

We fince hear, that the faid troops are now getting ready for the above purpole.

The following are the queries ftated in the cafe laid before the council by the city committee, with the council's anfwers thereto :

Quere 1. Can the Lord Mayor for the time being, of his own authority, legally call a Common-hall, for any other purpose than that of elections; or, if fuch Common-hall can be regularly called, by whom elfe, or by what other authority fhould it be done? whether by the cours of Lord Mayor and Aldermen, and that of Common-council jointly, or by any or either, and which of them, or how otherwife? and particularly was the Lord Mayor justified, and fufficiently warranted in calling the two lait extraordinary Cominon-halls?

The firft being done in confequence of the court of Common-council (of which the Aldermen are a part) having joined with a committee of the livery, in an application to him for that purpose, and the lecond being the natural confequence of, or a continuance of the former.

Anfwer. We apprehend, that the head officer of every corporation may convene the body, or any clafs of it, whenever he pleafes: We are of opinion, therefore, that the Lord Mayor for the time being may, of his own authority, legally call a Common-hall; and we fee no legal objection to his calling the two laft.

Quere 2. If the Lord Mayor, court of Aldermen, and court of Commoncouncil, jointly, or either of them feparately, can legally cali fuch Commonhall, are not the maiter and wardens of the feveral livery companies bound and obliged to obey the Mayor's precept, and to caufe their liveries to be feverally fummoned agreeable thereto? And if the mafter and wardens are bound to fummon their livery, agreeable to fuch precept, are not the three companies of Goldimiths, Weavers, and Grocers, aggregately and corporately, or are the maiters and wardens only, to whom alone thefe precepts are always directed, or that they together, with fuch of the courts of affiftants as were prefent at, and agreed to their respective orders and refolutions, jointly or individually, or any ways and how punishable for fuch their mifconduct and refufal? and if punishable, whether by the Lord Mayor only, or by the court of Common-council, feparately, or by the common or livery-hall, in comnion-hall affembled, or how otherwife?

Anfwer. We conceive it to be the duty of the proper officers of the feveral companies, to whom precepts for fummoning their respective liveries have been ufually directed, to execute thofe precepts, and that a wilful refufal on their parts is an offence punishable by disfranchifement. If it be thought proper to profecute with that view in the prefent cale, we think it most advifeable to proceed in the ufual way, by information, to be filed by the common Serjeant in the Mayor's court, which the common Serjeant may file, ex officio, if he pleases, or at the inftance of either of the bodies mentioned in the quere.
