SCOTLAND.

A gentleman lately riding through fome well cultivated domains in the neighbourhood of Gretna, had the gratification of feeing what (he fays)" furpaffes the fplendor of a court:" it was a picture of the patriarchal age. He faw the father, fon, and grandion (with shrce feparate teams), ploughing in the

fame field; all lufty, hale men, inured to labour. The parent-ftock of this ufeful family is named James Graham, of Hirft.

Died.] At Dupplin Caftle, the Rt. Hon. Robert Auriol Drummond, Earl of Kinnoul, Viscount Dupplin, Lord Hay of Kinfawns, and Baron Hay of Pedwardine in England, alfo one of his Majefty's Mott Honourable Privy Council. His Lordship is fucceeded by his eldest fon Thomas Robert Vifcount Dupplin, now Earl of Kinnoul.

Anthony Forfter, Efq. of Berwick upon Tweed. He was found dead in his bed, at his house at Jardin Field, in Berwickshire. An unloaded piftol was lying near him, which, it is fuppofed, had been difcharged within his mouth, as his head was literally fhattered to pieces. The body was buried in Berwick Churchyard.-John Carruthers, Efq. of Braes, in the parish of Annan (known in that diftrict by the ap pellation of the Laird of Braes); a subitantial yeoman.

IRELAND.

Several antient filver coins were lately found in the fite of the buildings on the weft fide of Back Lane, Dublin. The infcriptions are thofe of Lewis XII of France, of Philip and Mary of England, a few of Richard III and Elizabeth, and fome of James V of Scot-land. They were discovered on the fite of an old foundation of the Roman Catholic College in the aforefaid lane, and fuppofed to have been concealed by fome of the students. The College was fuppreffed about the middle of the fixteenth century.

Died.] At Killbeggen, Robert Pigott, Efq. brother to Sir G. P. and Lieutenant-Colonel of the S0th Regt. of Foot.-At Dublin, aged 115 years and 10 months, Wm. Mitchell, a revenue officer, born in Londonderry on the 1ft of July, 1689. He was in America when it belonged to England, and was one of thofe fuffering loyalists who loft his property by the war; on which account he was recommended to an employment in the revenue by Lord Townihend.

MARRIAGES, DEATHS, &C., ABROAD.

Married.] At Cawnpoor, in Bengal, Jofeph Brooks, jun. Efq. of the lion. Eaft India Company's fervice, to Mifs Lake, eldest daughter of General Lake, Commander in Chief of his Majesty's and the Company's Forces in India.

Died.] At Gibraltar, Mr. Waterman, Quarterman of his Majefty's Dockyard. He was the only perfon drowned by the lofs of the Weafel brig, lately, on Cabritta Point.-On the 6th of February, at Martinique, in confequence of the wounds he received in an attack upon one of the enemy's pofts, Lieut. Neville, of the Centaur man of war, fon of J. P. Neville, Efq. of Badfworth. He is the last of seven brothers who have fallen in their country's ferice. At Paris, a young Ruflian, who lately came to ftudy the art of drawing, and who was one of the competitors at the last exhibition at the Louvre, was fo chagrined at having obtained only the fourth or fifth prize, that on his return to Praflin's hotel, where he lodged, he took up a kitchen knife, and, after deftroying all his defigns, concluded with cutting his own throat.-At Stockholm, the great General and firft Architect to the King, Louis Jean Defpres. He was a native of France, and in his youth had been fent by the King to Rome, Guttavus III, from the account he had received of this young artist, invited him to Stockholm, where he died.--The late reigning Duke of Saxa Gotha: he was born on the 30th of Jan. 1745. He forbade in his will all ceremony at his burial, except fuch as is ufual for his lowett fubjects. His funeral took place in the night of the 2t5h ult. with the utmost privacy. A grave was dug in his Englifh garden, at the foot of that of his two children. The infant grand-daughter of the Duke had previoufly ordered flowers to be ftrewed all the way to the grave. It was midnight when the interment took place; and the body, wrapped in linen, being borne by the gentlemen of the ducal chamber, was then gently laid in the earth, and lightly covered with the fineft mould, without any farther ceremony. A very dark but ftill night favoured the folemnity of the fcene. A tree has been planted upon the spot by the hand of Prince Frederic, the Duke's fon, and which is intended to complete the decorations both of the garden and the grave.--At Geneva, M. Neckar, the cidevant financier of France: conformably to his will, his remains were transferred to his coun

try-houfe at Capet, and buried near thofe of his lady, which are preferved in fpirits of wine. The relatives of the deceated, with his nephew, about 11 years of age, at the r head, formed the proceflion. They were followed by a great number of perfons to whom the deceafed had been a benefactor during his life, and were met at Capet by feveral of the citizens of Geneva, drelled in mourning. Since the death of Madame Neckar, in 1796, he fcemed to have loft all relifh for the enjoyments of life, and had long been in the habit of going. alone daily to v fit her remains. His daughter, the Baroneis de Stacl, is the fole heirefs to his large property. Among many other pofthumous works, he has left one, entitled Dernieres Vues, &c.-At D'Efwart's, near Cambray, M. D'Orbay, General of Artillery, aged 82. He had ferved in that corps ever unce 1744; and, notwithstanding his great age, commanded the artillery of the army of the north in the two first campaigas after the revolution. To the military talents which he poffeffed, as he united the focial virtues in an emineut degree, his lofs is fentibly felt by a numerous family, of which he was an ornament.-At Mofcow, the Countellor M. Kraft, leaving a widow and feven children. The talents, philanthropy, and benevolence of this worthy man will be long remembered in that city. As manager under the Count Roftoptin, he had the daily care of fixty lick perfons, and expended more than 5,000 thalers every year in medicines. Upwards of 1,000 perfons were the regu lar attendants upon his funeral, and thus expreffed one of the most genuine panegyrics upon his life. Count Roftoplin, who justly eftimated the virtues of the deceated, means to perpetuats the memory of M. Kraft by erecting an handfome monument, and allowing his widow a yearly falary of 2,000 thalers. The Counte's Roftoplin has alfo appropriated the fum of 20,000 thalers to the education of the children of the deceafed. At Rome, Cardinal Lorenzana, of a fit of the apoplexy, in the 83d year of his age. This prelate was generally ftyled," the Father of the Poor,"
