[blocks in formation]

Ir is pleasant to look upon a fair and varied landscape, to view the goodness and glory of God, in all the works of his hands. It is still more pleasant to read of the wonders he has done on all the earth, and learn from the history of what has happened to man ever since the world. began, the might, and the wisdom, and the power, of that good God who ruleth over all, (Psalms ciii. 19,) and doeth according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. (Daniel iv. 34.) But it is the most pleasant of all to study the life of a holy man, and see in it the image of God's holiness and righteousness, (Ephesians iv. 24,) and the workings of his grace.

iv

Such a holy man was Moses, when it pleased the Lord to raise him up to deliver his people Israel, and to receive for them his laws from heaven, and lead them to the promised land.

PREFACE

TO THE SECOND EDITION.

THIS second edition of the Life of Moses, it is hoped, will be found in some small degree improved. The quotations from Scripture are more frequent, and have been corrected, and in some instances enlarged, by the writer, while the references have been added. The style has not been altered in any considerable degree. The writer's intention having been to give a life of Moses only, it was not thought necessary to introduce any more of the ceremonies and ordinances appointed to the Israelites, than were necessary to connect the events of that life. That the work might be of use in leading some young mind to a love of Christ, and a wish to keep his commands, has been above all the earnest. wish and prayer of the writer, and the only motive for the undertaking.

NEW-YORK, Sept. 1st. 1831.
