ΤΟ

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE

EARL OF LEVEN AND MELVILLE,

&c. &c. &c.

MY LORD,

WERE I mean enough to

imitate the too common art of Authors, by flattering your Lordship, you would despise me, and I should despise myself. I may, however, be permitted, without being accused of offering any adulation, simply to state my reasons for dedicating to you this Volume. They are,-the respect which I feel for yourself and

your illustrious family, and the remembrance which I have of the many friendly attentions your Lordship has shewn me.

YOUR Lordship's rank in life is high, and it receives additional exaltation from the attachment which you, like your Fathers, have uniformly shewn to the interests of religion. It is religion only which can confer true dignity on our nature. The memorial of virtue is immortal. It is known with God, ' and with men.'

MAY your Lordship always cherish the spirit, and emulate the conduct of your venerable ancest

ors! May you, and your noble Consort, and your promising Offspring, increase in virtue, honour, and pro

sperity, while on earth, and be received at last into the kingdom of Heaven! Then will your happiness be such as is fervently wished; but infinitely greater than can be expressed, by,

MY LORD,

Your Lordship's obliged, obedient,

and humble servant,

DUKE STREET, ́ January 20, 1807.

DAVID SAVILE.
