"The Advancement of Learning, though much less read than the superficial works of later times, is one of the most entertaining and instructive books in the language. The remarks in it strike the mind with such an evidence of conviction, that the truth discovered pleases like that derived from mathematical demonstration."

This edition contains the most complete collection of the writings of that distinguished philosopher that has ever been offered to the public. It has been accurately collated with all the early impressions, and the author's own arrangement restored: translations, as well as the originals, of his Latin productions are for the first time given.

250 BACONIS (JOHANNIS) Opus super quatuor Sententiarum libros, 4 vols. in 2, in the original hog's skin binding, very scarce, 51 5s Mediol. 1510

John Bacon, or Baconthorp, surnamed the Resolute Doctor, one of the most learned men of his time, was born toward the end of the 13th century, at Baconthorp, a village in Norfolk, from which he took his name. In his youth he was monk in the convent of Blackney, in Norfolk; he afterwards removed to Oxford, and from thence to Paris. Upon his return to England he was unanimously chosen the Twelfth Provincial of the English Carmelites, in a general assembly of that order, held at London, in the year 1329; he afterwards went to Rome, but returned to London, where he died in 1346.---Vide Biographia Britannica.
