THE FOLLOWING IS THE CHARACTER OF SKELTON,

By the Rev, Samuel Clapham, A. M.

"Skelton's excellencies are rare, and indeed peculiar to himself: he unites (what perhaps can be found in no other author) original sentiment, sourd argument, genuine piety, and animated persuasion. In his reasoning, he is as clear as Skerlock; in his warning, as solemn as Secker; in his piety, as engaging as Porteus; and in his exhortations, as vehement as Demosthenes; for it would be impossible to find an English author with whom he can, in this essential quality of an Orator, be compared."

A copy of Skelton's Works was sold by public auction, from the Marquis of Lansdowne's library, at the enormous sum of four guineas. It was purchased by James Allan Park, Esq. one of his Majesty's council; a gentleman, who knew well how to appreciate its value.
