Rev. 22.6. The LORD GOD of the Holy Prophets SENT HIS ANGEL to fhew unto his Servants the things which must shortly be done.

Ibid. v. 16. I JESUS have SENT MINE ANGEL to teftifie unto you these things in the Churches.

The Angel that appeared to St. John was the Angel of the Lord God, and the Lord God fent him but he was the Angel of Jefus, and Jesus Jent him therefore, Jefus is the Lord God of the Holy Prophets.

Luke I. 76. And thou Child fhalt be called the Prophet of THE HIGHESt, for thou fhalt GO BEFORE the FACE of the LORD to PREPARE HIS WAYS.

Matth.

Matth. XI. 10. Behold I fend my meffenger BEFORE THY FACE, to PREPARE THY WAY before thee.

John the Baptift goes before the face of the Lord, that is, of the Higheft, whofe prophet he is, to prepare his way. But, he was fent as a Meffenger before the face of Chrift, to prepare his way; who, therefore, is the Lord, and the Higheft.

The two following texts are but a repetition of the fame argument: but as they speak of Chrift under a different name, they ought to have a place for themselves.

Luke I. 16, 17. And many of the children of Ifrael fhall he turn to the LORD THEIR GOD: and he fhall go before HIM.

Matth. III. II. HE that cometh AFTER

ME is mightier than I — &c.

Here again, the Baptift is faid to go before the Lord God of the children of Ifrael: but it is certain, he went before Jefus Christ, the only

person who is faid to come after him: therefore, Jefus Chrift is the Lord God of the children of Israel. And the fame title is given to him in the prophet Hofea, I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will fave them by the Lord their God: which can be no other than the voice of God the Father, promifing Salvation by the perfon of God the Son.

Matth. XI. 10. Behold I fend мY mefSenger before THY face, to prepare THY way before THEE.

Mal. III. 1. Behold I fend мy meffensenger to prepare the way before ME.

As this prophecy is worded by St. Mathew (as also by St. Mark and St. Luke') there is a personal distinction between Him who fends his Meffenger, and Christ before whom the Messenger is fent - I fend мY Messenger-to prepare thy way before THEE. But the Prophet himfelf has it thus-I fend MY meffenger, to prepare the before ME. Yet the Evangelift and the Prophet are both equally correct and true.

For

For though Chrift be a different perfon, yet is he one and the fame God with the Father. And hence it is, that with the Evangelift, the perfons are not confounded; with the Prophet, the Godbead is not divided. This Argument, may serve to justify an excellent observation of our Church in the Homily upon the Refurrection "How "dare we be fo bold to renounce the presence of "the Father, Son, and Holy Ghoft? for where "one is, there is God all whole in Majefty, together with all his power, wisdom and good"nefs."

PS. LXXVIII. 56. They TEMPTED and provoked the MOST HIGH GOD.

TEMPT

1 Cor. X. 9. Neither let us CHRIST as fome of them also tempt

These texts do both relate to the fame rebellious Acts of the Ifraelites in the wilderness. In the former of them, the person they tempted is called the most High God: in the latter he is called Chrift: therefore, Chrift is the most High God.

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

But according to the Prophet,

Ifai. LIV. 5. Thy Maker is thine нUSBAND, the LORD OF HOSTS is his Name

And the Church, which is the Bride of Chrift, can no more have two diftinct husbands, than Christ can have two diftinct Churches. As the Church is the Bride, the Body, the Building of God; and as there is one Bride, one body, one building; fo is there on the other hand, one God, who is the husband or Bridegroom; one Chrift who is the Head; one God with the Lamb, who is the Light of it.
