But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be con15 tent with your wages. And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 'whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable, And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. 14 16 he 8 MARK I. And Jesus answering, said unto him, It is said,b Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy 5 God.-And the devil taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world 6 in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them for that is delivered unto me, and to whomsoever I will, I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, 8 all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. if thou wilt fall 10 down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan for it is written, Thou Ishalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and be- 13 hold, angels came and ministered unto him. And when the devil had ended the temptation, he departed from him for a season. § 17. Preface to John's Gospel. JOHN I. 1-18. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the 23 Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was 4 5 made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 07 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that 9 Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh 10 into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, 11 and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own re12 ceived him not. But to as many as received him, to them gave he power 13 to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: ' which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, 4 but of God.
