To remind the reader of the beautiful simplicity and religious earnestness of these ancient prayers in which the martyred forefathers of the Christian Church, in all probability, and the martyred Bishops of our own branch of the Universal Church, who revised and translated them, unbosomed themselves before God, is merely to tread in a path that is trite and well trodden. May these Collects continue to clothe "the hearty desires of God's humble servants' for many generations to come! THE COLLECTS TO BE USED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT. LMIGHTY GOD, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which Thy Son, Jesus Christ, came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the quick and dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through Him who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever.
