testimony, or word, preached by his servants. He that has prepared the feast, gives the appetite to the guests bidden-constrains them to enter in-stands at the head of the table, and gives them, in the most generous terms, a hearty welcome, saying, Eat O Friends! Drink, yea, drink abundantly, O Beloved! - Plead no longer thy unworthiness, sinner; this is an insult to him who prepared the feast, and kindly invites thee just as thou art: thy poor, proud, legal heart, robs. thee of much sweet peace and comfort; however, don't cast away thy little confidence, but remember, that Jésus is a good and gracious Physician: call upon his precious name: He delivereth the needy when he crieth, the poor also, and him that hath no helper. 10. CHRIST THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.---John i. 16. 1. THE fountain-fulness I behold In God's co-equal Son; Not half his glories e'er were told, 2. Wisdom and love and truth and grace, In Christ divinely meet; In him I see my Father's face, 33. Whate'er I want in him resides, How can I then be poor? With him the cov'nant firm abides, 4. Tho' call'd to bear a daily cross, 5. Tis the blest fulness of my Lord, And by his Spirit and his word, 6. Then let my soul exult and sing, All All my supplies of grace shall spring From him, the living way. When the Queen of Sheba heard of the wisdom of Solomon, she could not rest without a personal proof of that wisdom, of which she had heard so much; but when she was favored with a personal discovery of Solomon's wisdom, there was no more spirit in her! and, among other things, she exclaimed: “Thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard." Solomon was a type of Jesus, in his kingly power, and in his heavenly wisdom. The Queen of Sheba was a type of the Church, and more particularly the Gentile, who were afar off indeed; but now made nigh by the blood of Christ. As Sheba's Queen stood amazed at the wisdom and glory of Solomon, so does every called sinner, when by faith he is blessed with a sight of his superior glory, stand astonished at his own blindness, and more so at the unsearchable riches! everlasting love! and kind forbearance of Jesus, his glorious Lord! Unbelief is a cloud, that hides from the believer's view the only object of his desire; whose absence occasions many sore complaints and heart-rending sorrows in the Spouse is it not so believing soul? "Saw ye him whom my soul loveth," said the Church; yes! she loved him, tho' she could not see him-Does not his absence sharpen thy appetite, believer, and make thee think more highly of his presenge? 11. CHRIST'S QUESTION ANSWERED. Will ye also go away?---John vi, 67. 1. JESUS, my Redeemer, God, 2. Grant the Spirit's glorious pow'r, 3. Kind instruction thou dost give, 4. Thou the living Fountain art; Sweetest streams thou dost impart: 2. Turn, O turn! mine eyes away, Nothing on this earthly ball, Nothing so captivates the soul of a believer as the power of Jesus, conveyed to the heart by the word of his grace; and as the words of Jesus conveyed life to his disciples, who were his companions in the days of his ministry, and bound their hearts fast to him; so does the same power, from Jesus, through the word of the Gospel, convey fresh life to his disciples now. The life they live in the flesh, is by the faith of the Son of God, who loved them, and gave himself for them. The back-slidings of some of the Saints; the awful falls of old professors; the abounding errors and vile practises of many under the garb of religion; and, above all, the corruptions and infirmities, which he daily discovers in himself, constrain him to say with the disciple, "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." ས ཆ 3 |
