THE LIBRARY OF

THE LATE

1. ADDISON (JOSEPH). The Campaign, a Poem, To His

Grace the Duke of Marlborough. Folio, full polished calf, gilt

back and borders, gilt top, SOME EDGES UNCUT, by Riviere.

London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1705

A MAGNIFICENT COPY OF THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, with some

edges UNCUT. The Battle of Blenhiem had excited the attention of
Europe to the Conquerors, and the opportunity must not be lost to cele-
brate the event in poetry. Lord Treasurer Godolphin inquired anxiously
for a poet, and Lord Halifax named Addison as the proper person.

It is interesting to note that Addison composed this poem in his lodg-
ings "up three pairs of stairs.'

THE PRESENT COPY HAS THE HALF-TITLE.

2. ADDISON (JOSEPH). Remarks on Several Parts of Italy,

&c. In the Years 1701, 1702, 1703. 8vo, contemporary panelled

calf, gilt back (hinges weak).

London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1705

FIRST EDITION, with the half-title. Autograph of John Dumarery on
half-title, and his initials on title. It is interesting to note that this
book became so popular that it rose to four or five times its original price
before a second edition was brought out.

3. [ADDISON (JOSEPH).] Rosamond. An Opera. Humbly

Inscrib'd to Her Grace the Dutchess of Marlborough. Small 4to,
half morocco (top line of title shaved).

FIRST EDITION, with the Prologue by Pope and the Epilogue by Garth.
Voltaire expressed surprise that a nation which had so perfect a play as
"Cato" should prefer to see Shakespeare's plays.

5. [AKENSIDE (MARK).] The Pleasures of Imagination. A
Poem. In Three Books. Engraved title vignette by Boitard. 4to,
old boards, half calf (worn), UNCUT.

London: Printed for R. Dodsley, 1744

FIRST EDITION. Scarce in uncut state. With numerous marginal man-
uscript notes throughout the volume presumably in the hand of B. Pye,
whose autograph appears on inside cover.

22. AUSTIN (ALFRED). Original Manuscript of his Poem "Shelley's Death." Written on 3 sheets of foolscap and signed at the end.

An interesting Shelley item, written by a Poet Laureate. The note at the beginning explains the poem. "A little while ago, there died at Spezzia an old sailor, who in his last confession to the priest (whom he told to make it public) stated that he was one of the crew that ran down Shelley and Williams, which was done under the impression that the rich Milord Byron was on board with lots of money," etc.

A COLORED COPY, POSSIBLY UNIQUE

23. AYRES (PHILIP). Emblemata Amatoria. Emblems of Love. In four Languages. Dedicated to the Ladys. Engraved title and 45 plates, BRILLIANTLY ILLUMINED IN COLORS AND GOLD. 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt back and sides, gilt edges.

London: R. Bently, 1683

A POSSIBLY UNIQUE COPY OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION, WITH THE PLATES BEAUTIFULLY COLORED. Mr. Forman notes: "This is apparently an exceptional copy of the first edition drawn for the purpose of colouring before the foot inscriptions on leaves 5 to 12 had been engraved and when the signature "A" was standing on the 1st emblem instead of on the leaf facing it. Also the first line of Ayres' inscription for emblem 11 wants the word "to" between "not" and "conceal."

"Apart from this evidence there would be no doubt that the colouring and lavish gilding was done at the time of publication, as the paper with which the book is interleaved, the binding, and the marbled and papers are all contemporary. I NEVER HEARD OF ANOTHER COLOURED

COPY.''

24. AYRES (PHILIP). Emblemata Amatoria. In Four Languages. Engraved title and 45 brilliant plates. 12mo, old mottled calf, gilt back. London: Sold by R. Bently, 1683

28. BEAUMONT (FRANCIS) and FLETCHER (JOHN). Comedies and Tragedies

[blocks in formation]

Never Printed Before, And now published by the Authors Original Copies. With brilliant portrait of Fletcher by William Marshall. Folio, full old calf, blind tooled back and sides.

London: Printed for Humphrey Robinson, 1647

THE VERY RARE FIRST COLLECTIVE EDITION. A good sound copy. 36 of the Plays are here printed for the First Time. No fewer than 21 pages are occupied by complimentary verses. On the title margin is the old signature of Step: Thornley, and on the fly-leaf, that of E. FitzGerald, the translator of the Rubaiyat, with his bookplate.

29. BEAUMONT (FRANCIS) and FLETCHER (JOHN). The Wild-Goose Chase. A Comedie. As it hath been Acted with singular Applause at the Black-Friers: Being the Noble, Last, and Onely Remaines of those Incomparable Drammatists.

[blocks in formation]

Retrieved for the Publick delight of all the Ingenious. By a Person of Honour. Folio, contemporary calf, rebacked.

London: Printed for Humpherey Moseley, 1652

AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE AND CHOICE COPY OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION. On the verso of sig. a, the title of the play was evidently printed "The Wild-Chase Chase"; this has been corrected by a slip with the proper word "Goose" printed thereon, and pasted over the erroneously printed word. This has apparently escaped the notice of bibliographers. This is the play which was lost, and consequently could not be included in the 1647 folio edition of Beaumont and Fletcher's works. Bookplate of Frederic E. Wheeler.

30. BEAUMONT (JOSEPH). Psyche: or Loves Mysterie. In XX. Canto's: Displaying the Intercourse Betwixt Christ and the Soule. Folio, fine old polished calf, gilt back.

London: Printed by John Dawson for George Boddington, 1648
