At the annual meeting, held in the room of the theological library, Chauncey Place, December 15, 1818, a committee was appointed to confer with the committee of finance, of the commonwealth, upon the expediency of laying a tax upon retailers, and other venders of spirituous liquors within the same. Mr. Clapp, from this committee, reported at the annual meeting, 1819, "that, upon enquiry, he found that they (the finance committee) did not intend to propose any new source of revenue at the winter session of the legislature, and, therefore, nothing could be done concerning the tax on retailers, &c."

Annual reports were regularly made at the anniversary meetings, and orders passed to print and publish the same.

December 7, 1820.-A committee consisting of Hon. Judge Davis, Nathan Dane, Rev. Dr. Porter, Rev. Messrs. Lowell, and Jenks, and William Thurston, Esq., was appointed on the subject of petitioning the legislature to limit the number of taverners, retailers, &c.
