Westport (pop. 4,475) is incomparably the prettiest, most beautifully situated, and most interesting of the towns in the west of Ireland. Of Ciew Bay and the islands almost innumerable that stud the Atlantic around the coast of Mayo, where nature seems to have been so lavish in the creation of the beautiful and sublime in scenery, we have spoken in our general view, p. 1I. The town of Westport occupies a narrow valley, watered by a pretty mountain stream running into the bay. Two of the principal streets run parallel with the river, shaded by rows of fine trees, forming the north and south malls. The other streets branch in different directions, climbing up steep acclivities. The parish church is situated in the demesne of the Marquis of Sligo, which comes up to the town and stretches down to the bay, filling up the valley, over which Croagh Patrick rises to an altitude of 2,510 feet above the sea. The town, as well as the demesne, was laid out by John, the first Marquis of Sligo, with admirable taste; and it has been remarked that the place bears the impress of his care and liberality, just as Ballinasloe is distinguished by the care and liberality of the Earls of Clancarty. The two first Marquises are said to have spent in improvements at the rate of £22,000 a year. It is impossible to wander through this magnificent demesne, to gaze upon the fine baronial mansion embosomed in the trees, and the broad expanse of the bay, an inlet of the Atlantic, from whose gales it is sheltered, though it is visible from the windows; without being filled with admiration and delight. But when we go on to the quay and see large lofty stores empty and desolate, without an anchor or an oar, our feelings are proportionably depressed.
