"Mr. Ritfon has difgraced his pages by the most illiberal abuse of the editor of the " Reliques", &c. and by vile infinuations against his veracity. Yet these I think every reader of difcernment will find felf-confuted. For, when he fays in his note, p. 107, that Mr. Strevens had affured him, that the Bishop of Dromore's nephew had never feen one word of the Advertisement prefixed to the laft edition, to which his name is fubfcribed, he must suppose the fubfcriber, not to have the curiofity of the most common or illiterate reader. This falfehood therefore confutes itself.

"So again, in page 142, he would excite fufpicion from Mr. Tyrwhitt's not having feen the old MS. although that is fully accounted for in the Advertisement above-mentioned; and he further adds, "nor would the late excellent George Steevens, on the Bishop's perfonal application, confent to fanction the authenticity of the printed copy" (felection of the Reliques) "with his fignature". Now the reader may be affured, that while the last edition was preparing, the old MS. in question was left for near a year, with Mr. Nichols, the printer; and all the original editor's friends and acquaintance were invited to infpect it. Among thefe, Mr. Steevens, calling one morning, fpent an hour or two in examining the MS. and minutely collated one of thofe pieces, extracted from it, which are declared to be printed verbatim from the original. With the exactness of this he profeffed himself fo well fatisfied, that he allowed his name to be appealed to among thofe of the other gentlemen mentioned in the Advertisement. Now from this fhort inspection, it was impoffible that he could be defired to "fanction with his fignature" the printed copy of the work in general, as this bafe and malicious detractor would infinuate.

"It is fufficient to mention thefe ftrong inftances, to put the reader on his guard against the other falfe infinuations and defamatory affertions scattered through every part of the work above-mentioned: which, as Ritfon derived all he knew on the fubject originally from the Bishop, and had never received the leaft provocation from him, can only be accounted for from his avowed hatred of all Prifts and Prieft craft (for fo he ftiled Religion and its Ministers) which he carried to fuch an horrible excefs, that he was engaged in an attempt to prove our blessed Saviour an impoftor, when a dreadful paroxyf.n of frenzy put an end to his existence.

"It may be added, that his whole introduction and many of his notes are filled with petty cavils, and contradictions without proof, of every thing advanced in the Bishop's feveral effays; as any reader will be convinced who fhall take the trouble to compare them."
