in conversation with the writer, the ascent of this North Cape, where one has to climb up from the sea-shore, as being similar to his experience of the Great Pyramid in Egypt, where three men, exactly in the same way, are necessary to help up the traveller. It is upon this cape, at the time of the summer solstice, that the sun appears above the horizon" for several days together without setting," and then travellers are favoured with what is called "a view of the sun at midnight." One felt inclined to answer, 66 so may that Sun," which sets neither summer nor winter upon the British Empire, "now shine upon your Majesty at all seasons, and make your reign as prosperous, as all assembled in this place desire."

Eight days the festivity went on without a break, or anything to mar the public happiness; "nothing was seen or heard but sounds of pleasure and festivity." Every evening the Hotel Britannia held a table d'hôte for ambassadors, naval officers, members of the diplomatic body,

and all present officially on this occasion; the same wine I had tasted the year before at Reikjavik, Chateau d'Yquem, at the house of old Siemsen, the Norwegian consul in Iceland, poured out and set before us by his lovely daughter Rosa, was very much in fashion here, and flowed "like a free and sparkling river."

Two days after the representatives of all nations had assembled, the coronation took place. That ancient cathedral was once more thrown open which has been so celebrated in the past, and in that part of it they have been able to preserve I saw the grand old ceremony, which it would be impossible, without the deepest veneration, to behold. It is strange that in a country like Norway, notwithstanding its traditions, the native aristocracy should have been extinguished, and be no longer recognized by the government at Christiania; moreover people say at their suppression by the Norwegian parliament, the debate took the following rude form :

Count said, "If that order is abolished to which I belong, I bid this land, my native hills and rocks, farvel;" then some one rose upon the other side, "and your native rocks will echo in reply, vel" (very glad to hear it).

So I sat next to the Brazilian ambassador, and we compared opinions in French; I would rather have been able to roam over the edifice, watching the ceremony from behind some pillar. Opposite, however, were the ladies, every one dressed in white, by Her Majesty's particular desire. We waited patiently, and in due time the coronation anthem rose, at first softly, soon gloriously -"wakening thoughts that long have slept." Presently these arches rang with music from the animated, well-timed, enthusiastic assembly of voices round the organ, when His Majesty the king, taller than any one beside him, came in view; and the whole procession wound in slow and measured pace, right down the central aisle.
