A REVIEW OF ATHEISM.

THERE was a time when it seemed to be a general belief in our country, that it was impossible for a man of much intelligence to be an Atheist,and it was supposed that those who professed to be Atheists rather expressed the desire of their hearts than their real opinions. But since the French Revolution there has been no want of evidence that men may become Atheists in heart, in opinion, and in practice. At the present time it is perhaps not doubted that there are such characters in our own country, and men too who have an ardent desire to make proselytes to their creed. The occurrence of such circumstances furnishes an opportunity for real Christians to evince the nature and the importance of the religion which they profess. This, however, is not to be done by the indulgence of hatred or ill-will towards the Atheists; but by imitating the kindness of that God who is good unto all, even to the evil and unthankful. If we have the happiness of believing that we have a wise and kind heavenly Father, while the Atheists have not this happiness, let our conduct be such as shall be adapted to lead them to consider what a privilege it must be if there is an Almighty Father possessed of such wisdom and benignity as the gospel
