sins, and rise again for their justification: nevertheless they are not justified, until the Holy Spirit doth in due time actually apply Christ unto them ".

God doth continue to forgive the sins of those that are justified and although they can never fall from the state of justification ", yet they may by their sins fall under God's fatherly displeasure, and not have the light of his countenance restored unto them, until they humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance".

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John ii. 1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. VI. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament'.

CHAP. XII. Of Adoption.

ALL those that are justified, God vouchsafeth, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption: by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children of God; have

broken may rejoice. Ver. 9. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Ver. 10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Ver. 11. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Ver. 12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation and uphold me with thy free Spirit. Psal. xxxij. 5. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Matth. xxvi. 75.. And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. 1 Cor. xi. 30. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. Ver. 32. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. Luke i. 20. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be perform ed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

VI. Gal. iii. 9. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Ver. 13. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on 2 tree: Ver. 14. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gen tiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Rom. iv. 22. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.. Ver. 23. Now, it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; Ver. 24. But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him, that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead. Heb. xiii. 8. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.

Rev. iii. 12, Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God and I will write upon him my new name.

CHAP. XIII. Of Sanctification.

THEY who are effectually called and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit created in them, are farther sanctified really and personally, through the virtue of Christ's death and resurrection 2, by his word and Spirit dwelling in them; the dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed, and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified", and they more and more quickened and strengthened in all saving graces, to the practice

i. 14. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

I. 1 Cor. vi. 11. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Acts xx. 32. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Phil. iii. 10. That I may know him, And the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. Rom. vi. 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Ver. 6. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

b John xvii. 17. Sanctify them, through thy truth: thy word is truth. Eph. v. 26. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. 2 Thess. ii. 13. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you,

brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth.

Rom. vi. 6. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Ver. 14. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

d Gal. v. 24. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts. Rom. viii. 13. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

II. This sanctification is throughout in the whole man %, yet imperfect in this life; there abideth still some remnants of corruption in every part": whence ariseth a continual and irreconcileable war; the flesh fusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.

III. In which war, although the remaining corruption for a time may much prevail, yet, through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome1: and so the

which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

f 2 Cor. vii. 1. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Heb. xii. 14. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

II. 8 1 Thess. v. 23. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly : and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

h1 John i. 10. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Rom. vii. 18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. Ver. 23.

Dearly be loved, I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.
