The Sabbath school bell had rung, and James had found his Bible and question book, and was just ready to start for school.

"James," said a lady to him, "you had better leave your Bible at home: you will not need that at school."

"O yes, I shall,-I shall want it to find the references." "But you ought to have looked those all out and committed them to memory, in getting your lesson, so that you could recite them without the Bible."

"But our teacher lets us read them. We never look them out till we get to school, and the teacher asks the question."

This boy, it was found, seldom looked at his lesson at all, till he came to recite! And the teacher did not require his scholars to commit any of the lessons to memory; all they did was merely to look out the references and read them, as the teacher asked the questions!

Here is, indeed, a very serious evil. Should it become general, it will render the whole system of Sabbath school instruction comparatively worthless.

It is to be hoped this reference to the evil spoken of, will be sufficient to secure its correction. That no scholar will hereafter fail, for a single Sabbath, of thoroughly committing to memory the verses given out as the lesson, and either the references or answers to the questions in their own language, deduced from the references. Parents and teachers, if they would have the Sabbath school prove a blessing to the young, should see that the lessons are thus prepared. Society's Annual Report.

THE BIBLE. The Bible contains the literature of heaven, of eternity. It is destined to survive in human hearts every other book, and command the ultimate veneration and obedience of the world.

OLYMPIA MORATA: HER LIFE AND TIMES. By Robert Turnbull. Boston, Mass. Sabbath School Society. pp. 224.

In this book, the character of a talented, highly educated, and devotedly pious Italian lady, is depicted with felicity and discrimination. Sketches of other distinguished individuals, and of the history of the times, are also appositely interwoven. Among the striking passages, -which, did space allow, it might be easy to multiply,-we select a few sentences of beautiful philosophy, from the letter of Secundo Curio, a learned man, addressed to the heroine, after her great suffering which held her husband and herself during the siege and sack of Schweinfurt, in Germany, whither they had removed their residence, about the year 1550.

"And, although spoiled and deprived of all your worldly goods, you with difficulty escaped from the flames, have you not retained, along with your inestimable husband, all that in the words of Bias, the Priennian, deserves to be accounted valuable? your genius, your learning, your wisdom, your innocence, your piety, your faith, and the rest of your real treasures? Truly, you have left behind you the goods of fortune, your playthings,-which are not worthy to be accounted possessions, these indeed have been seized by the enemy, which had they been really and intrinsically yours, could never have happened. But as affairs now stand, your personal safety being insured, I am far from being disposed to grieve on your account, and I feel persuaded you will think as I do, and give thanks to God, your preserver; and that your piety and gratitude will be proportioned to your past sufferings, calamities and dangers."

The appendix, comprising between seventy and eighty pages, contains articles of interest, especially the one which describes the persecution and exile of the Christians of Locarno. We commend this volume to the perusal of all; the name of its author being a sufficient guarantee for its excellence.-Hartford Courant.
