THE

National School Festival,

PUBLISHED BY

HUTCHINS & HORTON,

EAST BOSTON, MASS.

This magazine furnishes a satisfactory supply for the universal demand for articles suited to

DAY SCHOOLS, SABBATH SCHOOL CONCERTS, MISSION CIRCLES, AND JUVENILE TEMPERANCE ORGANIZATIONS.

For Day Schools the FESTIVAL will furnish pure, healthful, instructive, and entertaining Dialogues, Declamations, Charades, Tableaux, and Motion Songs.

For Sabbath School Concerts there will always be new and original arrangment of Scripture themes; Object Lessons, Conversations on Bible Geography, Natural History, etc.; and every number will contain one of the new and popular S. S. Exercise Songs, with music.

The Missionary Department will contain Dialogues and Recitations for Mission Concerts and the Public exercises of Mission Circles.

Special effort will be made to meet the increasing wants of the COLD WATER TEMPLES and other Juvenile TEMPERANCE Societies, by the supply of Temperance Dialogues, Tableaux, Songs, and Addresses.

As the want of such a magazine had been long and widely felt and expressed; as no other work of similar design exists; and as the temporary suspension of the magazine has been greatly regretted, the publishers trust that their new issues will receive continued and increased patronage.

Agents for NATIONAL SCHOOL FESTIVAL are wanted in every city and town, to whom liberal cash terms will be given.

The Magazine will be conducted by Mrs. E. M. POND, and Mrs. M. B. C. SLADE, of Fall River, Mass.

Ministers and Superintendents of Day and Sabbath Schools, receiving our circulars, will confer a favor by handing them to the various teachers under their charge.

Subscription, 75 cents per annum; single or sample copies,

20 cents.

Back numbers, commencing with No. 8, supplied on the same terms, i.e. single copies, 20 cents; 4 copies, 75 cents. Address

SEX IN EDUCATION;

Or, a Fair Chance for the Girls. By EDWARD H. CLARKE, M. D. 1 vol. 16mo. $1.25. This is far the most important argument recently contributed to the discussion of the education of girls. Dr. Clarke brings to the subject the studies and observations of many years, and writes solely in the interest of girls, to promote their physical and intellectual well-being. He bases his opinion on physiological facts, states these frankly yet delicately, and deduces from them the conclusion that the programme and method of study for girls need reconstruction. His book demands and will receive careful attention.

CHILD-LIFE IN PROSE.

12mo.

Edited by JoHN G. WHITTIER. Abundantly
and beautifully illustrated. 1 vol.
Full gilt. $3.

This is a companion volume to "CHILD. LIFE" in Poetry, published two years ago, which has enjoyed a remarkable popularity. The selections for this book have been made with scrupulous care from a large number of author in many languages. Mr. Whittier's literary taste, his hearty sympathy with childhood, and his profound regard for moral purity, give ample assurance of the great excellence of this book. It is not intended exclusively for children, but for all who appreciate the beauty and charm of healthy child-life. Many pictures add to the desir ableness of the book, which is in every way admirably suited for a birthday or holiday gift.

LITERATURE AND DOGMA.

An Essay toward a better Apprehension of the Bible. By MATTHEW ARNOLD. 1 vol. 16mo. $1.50.

"Once again the much-shaken mind of this generation has a promise of certainty and peace offered to it; and there are characteristics of Mr. Arnold's creed which are likely to make it, to a large section of Englishmen, more attractive than any rival.

It is a

book of rare moral and intellectual force, original in the greatness and directness of its aim as well as in its style and diction." — The Contemporary Review.

MYTHS AND MYTH-MAKERS:

Old Tales and Superstitions Interpreted by Comparative Mythology. By JoiiN FISKE. 1 vol. 12mo. $2.00.

"The seven chapters of the volume relate respectively to The Origins of Folk Lore,' The Descent of Fire,' Werewolves and Swan-Maidens,' Light and Darkness,' Myths of the Barbaric World,' 'Juventus Mundi,' and The Primeval Ghost World.' It is both an amusing and instructive book, evincing large research and giving its results in a lucid and attractive style."- Boston Globe.

LITERARY and SOCIAL JUDGMENTS

Enigmas of

BY W. R. GREG, author of "
Life," etc. 1 vol. 12mo. $2.00.
CONTENTS: Madame de Stael; British and
Foreign Characteristics; False Morality of
Lady Novelists; Kingsley and Carlyle; French
Fiction; The Lowest Deep; Chateaubriand;
M. De Tocqueville; Why are Women redun
dant? Truth versus Edification; Time; Good
People.

In these essays Mr. Greg shows the same masterly skill in treating literary and social topics, which his remarkable work, "Enigmas of Life," evinced for discussing the most profound problems of human existence and destiny. The important subjects and notable persons brought under consideration, and the large wisdom and deep sincerity stamped on every page, give this volume peculiar attrac tions for intelligent and thoughtful readers.

THE STORY OF GOETHE'S LIFE. By GEORGE HENRY LEWES. With Portrait. 1 vol. 16mo. $1.50.

Mr. Lewes's "Life of Goethe " is generally conceded to be a masterpiece in biography, and altogether the most satisfactory of the many 'Lives' of the great poet, dramatist and philosopher. In this volume the author has omitted such portions of the former work as could be omitted without lessening the completeness of the work as a narrative of Goethe's career, and thus has made a book so inexpensive as to come within the reach of all the admirers of the illustrious German's genius.

ENIGMAS OF LIFE.

By W. R. GREG. 1 vol. 12mo. $2.00.

CONTENTS. Realizable Ideals; Malthus Notwithstanding; Non-Survival of the Fit test; Limits and Direction of Human Devel opment; The Significance of Life; De Profundis; Elsewhere; Appendix.

"Mr. Greg arrests his readers' attention. He, as it were, buttonholes the public, and compels them to give heed to questions to which they often refuse a hearing. The enig mas he proposes are riddles as old as the hills, or, at any rate, as the existence of mankind. The significance of life, man's prospects of progress on this earth and of a future exist ence elsewhere, are themes which have been discussed in all ages, and which will in all likelihood be discussed for all time to come. The lapse of centuries takes nothing from their importance, but in a certain sense it lessens their interest; for the men of to-day are inclined to cast aside the consideration of problems which have taxed the ingenuity of all ages, and which, since they remain unsolved, may possibly be unsolvable. To these fandamental problems of life Mr. Greg, nevertheless, has endeavored to bring back the thoughts of the world. The three editions through which his work has run in England are proof of his success. . Mr. Greg's. writings are marked with a very peculiar out. spokenness and directness. In The Enigmas of Life,' he speaks out in clear, definite language very rarely to be found in theological writings."-The Nation (N. Y.)
