in death, it is he that can refolve all our doubts, fecure you in danger, fave your fouls, and bring you to glory, where all joy is enjoyed. O therefore give all glory to the Lord, and yourselves to him. So much, or fo little for this time.-Amen.

SERMON II.

The KING of KINGS.

CANT. V. 16. He is altogether Lovely..

NOW proceed to the fecond title, which is given to the Lord Jefus Christ, and that is King of Kings. Auftin defired to have feen three things before he died. 1. Rome in her glory and purity. 2. Paul in his pulpit a preaching. 3. Chrift in the flesh upon earth. Cato the heathen repented himself of three things. 1. That ever he fpent a day idly. 2. That ever he revealed his fecrets to a wonian. 3. That ever he went by, water, when he might have gone by land." Thales gave thanks for three things. 1. That he was endued with reason, and was not a beast. 2. That he was a man, and not a woman. 3: That he was a Grecian, and not a barbarian. And I, poor I, defire to fee three things before I die. 1. Babylons ruin. 2. Chrift's reigning. 3. Satan's binding. The angel hath

Sworn by him that lives for ever, that time Jhall be no longer, Rev. x. 6. Who will not believe this facred oath? Did he lay it? No, he fwore it: How? By himself? No, by him that lives for ever: What? that time muft be no longer. The time fhall be no longer. The Lord whom you feek fhall fuddenly come, faith the Prophet, Mal. iii. 1. They who keep the word of God's patience, God will keep them in the hour of temptation.

Well, the fecond title of Jefus Chrift, is the King of Kings, I pray you take notice of it, 'Tis now to be handled; in Rev. xix. 16. He had a Name written, fays the text, King of Kings, Lord of Lords. Beloved, Jefus Chrift is a three-fold King.

First, his enemies King-Secondly, his faints King-Thirdly, his Father's King.

The first he rules over-The fecond he rules in-The third he rules for.

I fhall begin with the firft, and take them in their order.

First Chrift is his enemies King, that is, he is King over his enemies, Chrift is a King above all Kings; and therefore, the fcripture files him King of Kings, as you have it in 1 Tim. vi. 15. Chrift is a King above all Kings; for if he were not, he could not be a King over all Kings. Now that he is a King above all Kings, two fcriptures prove it, in Pfalm, xcviii. 27. faith God the Father there, I will make my first born, higher than

the Kings of the earth. Now, who is the first born? Why it is Jefus Chrift, as he is elfewhere called the first born of every creature: Now fays God, I will make my firk born higher than the Kings of the earth; higher in glory, power, and majefty. So in Rev. i. 5. there Chirft is called the Prince of the earth. Alafs! what are all the mighty, great, and honourable men of the earth, to Jefus Chrift? they are but like a bubble in the water. For if all the nations, in comparison to God, be but as the drop of a bucket, or the dust of the balance, as the Prophet fpeaks in Ifa. xl. O how little then are the Kings of the earth, nay, beloved, Chrift Jefus is not only above the Kings of the earth, but he is higher than the angels, and there fore the angels in heaven, are commanded to worship him. He is the head of all angels, Col. ii. 10. He is the head of all principalitis and powers, which includes the angels, and in Heb. i. 6. Let all the angels of God, worship him, God will have the angels worfhip Chrift, as well as men. O firs, Chrift is a King, before whom the angels veil their faces, and the Kings of the earth do caft down their crowns.

Again, as he is a King above all Kings, fo is he a King over all Kings too. Jefus Chrift is an universal King, he is a King over all Kingdoms, over all governments, powers, and over all people; Dan. vii. 14.

There is given to him, fays the text, dominion, and power, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations and languages were to ferve him. Now, who was this? in the 13th verfe it is clearly meant Jefus Christ, all people, nations, languages and kingdoms, were to obey him; fo that you fee Chrift is not only king of faints, but king of nations too; and therefore you find in Pfal. ii. 8. It is a text often read, but little obferved, Afk of me fays the father, and I will give thee heaven for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy poffeffion. The very heathen are given to Chrift, and the utmoft parts of the earth for his poffeffion.

And as the Lord Jefus Chrift hath all the kingdoms of the earth given to him, so likewife he hath all power, or elfe what should he do with a kingdom; Matt. xviii 28. Al power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Oh! firs, here is a text that should revive the hearts of faints. All power is given to me in heaven and in earth, faith Chrift to his Apoftles: So that it is he that binds kings in chains, aud princes in fetters of iron, as the laft Pfal. faving one fpeaks, it is he that Juffers no man to do them wrong, yea, he reproves kings for their Jakes, and breaks mighty kings in pieces for the faints fake, Pfal. cv. 13. And therefore it is he that ever-rules kings, and overcomes the kings of the earth; that makes war with the faints, Rev. xvii. 14.

The ten kings made war with the lamb, but the lamb prevailed; and why? Because he was King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. This is the firft, Jefus Chrift is his enemies king, that is, he is king above their kings, and over their kings.

Secondly, As Jefus Chrift is his enemies king, fo he is his faints king: I will give you two scriptures to prove it, though I need not, yet I will, becaufe of making things very clear as I go on. In Rev. xv. 3 There Jefus Chrift is called the faints king: Thou king of faints. So alfo in Mat. xxi. 5. Tell ye the daughters of Sion, behold thy king cometh: So that by these two fcriptures, you see Jesus Christ is king of faints. Now beloved, I befeech you to mind me; Jefus Christ, you fee is king of the bad, and of the good; but as for the wicked, he rules over them by his power and might, but the faints he rules in them by his fpirit and graces. Now, to this the fcripture witneffeth, that Jefus Chrift rules in the faints, and is king of the faints

therefore it tells us, Col. i. Chrift in you the hope of glory; and elfe-where, Know ye not that Chrift is in you, except ye be reprobates? Mark here, Chrift must be in you, the hope of glory; fo in Pfal. xxiv. Lift up your heads, Oye gates, and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. Here Chrift is called the King of glory: And the Pfalm calls upon men to open their
