Nicht nur die Gebrüder Luchtmans in Ley den befizen ein Exemplar davon, sondern es sind deren noch viele tausend in verschiedenen Händen, ja der Buchhändler Elwe in Amsterdam bat selbst noch die Originalformen. Jezt hat Hr. Alexander Tilloch in London, Herausgeber des Philofophical magazine in dem Augußstufe dieses Jahres bekannt gemacht, daß auch ein Hr. Ged, ein Schotte, zu Anfänge des vorigen Jahrhunderts, die Kunst von gegogenen Platten zu druten erfunden, und von der liniversität Cambrid ge den Auftrag erhalten hatte, Bibeln und Gebet. bücher au drufen, die er aber, geheimer Ränke hal ber, nicht zu Stande brachte; indessen glükte es ihm, durch Nachtarbeit, ohne daß es seine neidischen Cols legen in der Officin merkten, im J. 1736. einen Sal lug zu vollenden, wovon Hr. Tilloch noch ein Exem plar hat, und woraus er ein Blatt in jedes Erems plar seines Magazins geklebt hat. Aber Herr Til loch selbst, ein gebohrner Glasgower fiel, ohne um die erwähnten Versuche zu wissen, auf diese Druckart, welche er dem berühmten Foulis mittheilte; beyde brachten dieselbe zu grosser Vollkommenheit, und liessen sich sogar ein Privilegium dafür ertheilen, wovon jeder, der diese Nachricht in Zweis fel giebt, leicht eine Abschrift aus dem gehörigen Col legio in London erhalten kann. Sie drukten mit ihren Stereotypen, etliche Kleinigkeiten nicht zu geden ten, The Economy of human Life (wovon der tref liche Bode bey Hr. Göschen eine Uebersezung unter dem Tit. Die Weißheit an die Menschen herausgab) und Xenophons Anabafis. Hr. T. bat auch hiervon in dem gedachten Magazine ausgeschnittene Blätter mitgetheilt, welche zwar den daneben geklebten Stes reotypen des Hrn. Didot keinerweise beykommen, aber doch recht artig sind. Weder Tilloch noch Foulis erndteten, gewisser Privat Ursachen wegen, grosse Vortheile von ihrem Patente. Herr T. råth, daß man die Stereotypen allgemein einführen sollte, er sagt: gewöhnlich wende man zwar ein, daß sie, der grossen Kosten wegen, nur bey claßischen, immer ab

gehenden Werken, gebraucht werden könnten; dies sey aber irrig, weil man bey stereotypisch gedrukten Bus chern, deren Verkauf minder gewiß sey, nur die Platten verlieren würde, da man hingegen, nach der iezis gen Art zu druken, bey schlecht abgehenden Schriften den Buchdruferlohn sammt dem theuren Papier einer Auflage einbussen müsse, welche beyde sehr hoch fåmen. Wenn von ganzen Büchern feststehende Blattseiten gegoßen würden; so brauchte man nie mehr Exemplare abzudrufen, als unmittelbar zum Verkaufe gebraucht würden; auf diese Weise könnte das Geld, welches jezt auf Papier verwandt würde, oft blos um Ballenweise in den Niederlagen der Buchhändler zu Maculatur zu werden, einen Beytrag zu dem Capitale neuer Werke abgeben; hierbey würden der Buchdrufer mit seinen Leuten, so wie der Buchhändler ansehnlich gewinnen; und wenn ein Fehler in den Platten entdekt würde, so könnte man ihn leicht verbessern, und er brauchte nicht, wie jezt, durch eine ganze Auflage von vielen tausend Exemplaren zu laufen.
