THE Committee of the General Assembly on Aids to Devotion was originally appointed in 1849, for the purpose of drawing up forms of Social Worship, according to the usage of the National Church of Scotland, for Soldiers, Sailors, Colonists, and other persons who are deprived of the ordinary services of a Christian Ministry. In pursuance of this object, the Committee published in 1859, a collection of 'Prayers for Social and Family Worship,' which, having speedily attained a very wide diffusion, and met with a highly gratifying appreciation among the members of the Church, both at home and in the colonies, received in 1863 the sanction of the General Assembly. Encouraged by the favourable reception of their previous labours, and urged by numerous solicitatations which were addressed to them, the Committee were induced to prepare another volume, consisting exclusively of Prayers for Family Worship, and adapted, not to any particular class, but to the general circumstances of all Christian households.
