+ Magnificat. S. Luke 1. 46.

(This fhall be faid or fung‡ after the first Lesson in the Evening Service.)

M

Y foul doth magnify the Lord: and my fpirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowlinefs of his hand-maiden. * For behold, from henceforth all generations fhall call me bleffed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations.

He hath fhewed ftrength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their feat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath fent empty away.

He remembring his mercy, hath holpen his fervant Ifrael: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his feed for ever. Glory be to the Father, &c.

As it was in the beginning, &c.

Or elfe this Pfalm, except it be on the Nineteenth Day of the Month.

Paraphrafe on the MAGNIFICAT.

I joyfully praise God my Saviour: becaufe he hath deigned to fhew fuch regard to his Servant in her lowly ftation-For henceforth future Ages will pronounce me truly happy; fince he who is infinitely powerful and holy hath been pleased to bestow upon me this honour: tho' his kindness indeed extends to perfons of every Nation and Condition that truly serve him--He hath

wonderfully disappointed the expectations of the ambitious. He hath depreffed the proud Rulers of the Earth, and exalted the lowly in Heart.-He hath filled those who hunger after Righteousness with the bounties of his Grace, but the rich in Spirit he hath rejected. He hath fent forth a Saviour to Ifrael as he promised to Abraham and his Seed.

For behold from henceforth, &c. On this paffage the Church of Rome feems to have founded, in fome measure, that adoration which she pays to the Virgin Mary; through a mistaken interpretation of the Word Blessed: which, in the Scriptures, when it relates to a human perfon, generally fignifies happy.

Cantate Domino. Pfalm 98.

Sing unto the Lord a new fong: for he hath done marvellous things.

With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory.

The Lord declared his falvation: his righteousness hath he openly fhewed in the fight of the heathen.

He hath remembred his mercy and truth toward the house of Ifrael and all the ends of the world have feen the falvation of our God.

Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands fing, rejoice, and give thanks.

Praise the Lord upon the harp: fing to the harp with a Pfalm of thanksgiving.

With trumpets alfo and fhawms: O fhew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King.

Let the Sea make a noife, and all thatt herein is the round world, and they that dwell therein.

Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord: for he cometh to judge the earth. With righteousness fhall he judge the world: and the people with equity.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

Then followeth the Second Leffon taken out of the New Teftament, and after that the Song of Simeon, as followeth.

Paraphrafe in the 98th PSALM,

O praise the Lord with unafual Fervency, for he hath wrought wonderful Things for us.-By his own mighty power he hath vanquished our Foes. He hath granted us a remarkable Deliverance in the fight of the Nations around us. He hath performed the gracious promifes which he made to Ifrael; and, all the World muft own him to be a Saviour indeed-O'therefore express your joyful Gratitude to him, ye favoured people, in Hymns of praife: and with your Voices unite

every melodious Inftrument, to heighten your Devotion, and help you worthily to celebrate Jehovah your King-Let the loud Ocean, and its Fullness, the Earth and its Inhabitants join the folemn Concert.-Let the Floods pour forth in full ftreams their applaufe; and theMountains exulting raife their lofty Heads; for the Lord reigneth over all the Kingdoms of the World with Juftice and Equity. All Glory, &c.
