Chap. xviii, xix.

hill with the rod of God in mine hand. 16 So Jothua did as Mofes had faid to him, and fought with Amalek: and Mofes, Aaron, and Hur, went up to the top of the hill.

11 And it came to pafs, when Mofes held up his hand, that Ifrael prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Mofes hands were heavy; and they took a fione, and put it under him, and he fat thereon; and Aaron and Hur ftayed up his hands, the one on the one fide, and the other On the other fide; and his hands were fteady until the going down of the fun. 13 And Johua difcomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the fword.

14 And the Loan faid unto Mofes, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 And Mofes built an altar, and called the name of it JEHOVAH-nitfi:

16 For he faid, Because the LORD hath fworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation. CHAP. XVIII.

1 Jethro bringeth to Mofes his wife and two fans: Mofes entertaineth him, 13 and acceptetb bis counfel. WHEN Jethro the prieft of Midian, Mo. father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Mofes, and for Ifrael his people, and that the LORD had brought Ifrael out of Egypt;

2 Then fethro, Mofes's father-in-law, took Zipporah, Mofes's wife, after he had fent her back,

3 And her two fons; of which the name of the one was Gerfhom; for he faid, I have been an alien in a strange land:

4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, faid be, was mine help, and delivered me from the fword of Pharaoh:

5 And Jethro, Mofes's father-in-law, came with his fons and his wife unto Mofes into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

6 And he faid unto Mofes, I thy father-inlaw Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two fons with her.

And Mofes went out to meet his father. In-law, and did obeisance, and kiffed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

And Mofes told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Ifrael's fake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and bet the LORD delivered them.

9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Ifrael, whom Egypt divered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 And Jethro faid, Bleffed be the LoRn, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from underthe hand of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly be was above them.

12 And Jethro, Mores's father-in-law, took #burnt-offering and facrifices for God; and Aaron tame, and all the elders of Ifrael, to eat

and giveth him counsel.

bread with Mofes's father-in-law before God. 13 And it came to país on the morrow, that Mofes fat to judge the people: and the people flood by Mofes from the morning unto the evening.

14 And when Mofes's father-in-law faw all that he did to the people, he faid, What is this thing that thou doeft to the people? Why fitteft thou thyself alone, and all the people ftand by thee from morning unto even?

15 And Mofes faid unto his father-in-law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and Ijudge between one and another, and I do make them know the ftatutes of God and his laws.

17 And Mofes's father-in-law faid unto him, The thing that thou doeft is not good.

18 Thou wilt furely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thy felf alone."

19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counfel, and God thall he with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayeft bring the caufes unto God:

20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt thew them the way where

in

they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover, thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, fuch as fear God, men of truth, hating covetoufnefs; and place fuch over them, to be rulers of thousands, and ru lers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers

of tens.

22 And let them judge the people at all feafons: and it half be, that every great matter they thall bring unto thee, but every fmall matter they shall judge: fo fhall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the bur den with thee.

23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee fo, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people fhall alfo go to their place in peace.

24 So Mofes hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had faid.

25 And Mofes chofe able men out of all Ifrael, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thoufands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all feafons: the hard caufes they brought unto Mofes, but every small matter they judged themfelves.

27 And Mofes let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land. CHAP. XIX.

The people come to Sinai. 3 God's message to them out of the mount. 8 Their answer. third month, when the children of Ifrael were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the fame day came they into the wil dernefs of Sinai.

2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the defert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Tfrael encamped before the mount.

3 And Mofes went up unto God, and the I.ORD called unto him out of the mountain, faying, Thus fhalt thou fay to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Ifrael;

5 Now there ore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenart, then ye thall be a peculiar treafure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

6 And ye thall be unto me a kingdom of priefts, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the chil

dren of frael.

7 And Mofes came and called for the

elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.

8 And all the people answered together, and faid, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Mofes returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

9 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I fpeak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Mofes told the words of the people unto the LORD.

10 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Gounto the people, and fanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wath their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the fight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt fet bounds unto the peo ple round about, faying, Take heed to yourjelves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whofoever toucheth the mount shall be furely put to death:

13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he thall furely be ftoned, or hot through; whether it be beaft or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet foundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

14 And Mofes went down from the mount unto the people, and fanétified the people; and they washed their clothes.

15 And he faid unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives. 16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; So that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17 And Mofes brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a fmoke, because the LORD defcended upon it in fire and the fmoke thereof afcended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19 And when the voice of the trumpet founded long, and waxed louder and louder, Mofes fpake, andGod answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD cailed Mofes up to the top of the mount; and Mofes went up.

21 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Go down, charge the people, left they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests alfo, which come near to the LORD, fanctify themselves, left the LORD break forth upon them.

23 And Mofes laid unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedit us, faying, Set bounds about the mount, and fanctify it.

The ten commandments. 24 And the LORD faid unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, left he break forth upon them. 25 So Mofes went down unto the people, and fpake unto them. 19 And they said unto Mofes, Speak thon with us, and we will hear: but let not God fpeak with us, left we die.

20 And Moles faid unto the people, Fear not: tor God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye fin not.

21 And the people ftood afar off, and Mo fes drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
