And Jacob faid, Thou shalt not give me any thing. If thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock. 32 I will pafs through all thy flock to-day, removing from thence all the speckled and (potted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the (potted and fpeckled among the goats; and of such thall be my hire. 33 So thall my righteoufnefs anĺwer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face; every one that is not fpeckled and fpotted among the goats, and brown among the theep, that thall be accountea ftolen with me, 34 And Laban faid, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word. 35 And he removed that day the he-goats that were ring-streaked and potted, and all the fhe-goats that were fpeckled and spotted, and every one that had fome white in it, and all the brown among the theep, and gave them into the hands on is fons. 36 And he fet three days' journey bet i B Jacob departeth from Laban. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; 49 And Mizpah: for he faid, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are abfent one from another. so I thou thalt afli my daughters, or if then that take orber wives befides my daugh ters, no man is with us; fee, God is witnefs betwixt me and thee. 53 And Laban faid to facob, Behold this, heap, and behold this pillar, which I have call betwixt me and thee: $ This heap be witnefs, and this pill be witnefs, that I will not pa's over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pafs over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. CHAP. XXXII. The kindness of Jacob and Efau at their meeting. 18 Jacob buyeth a field at Shalem, and builde'h an altar. A ND Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Efau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the chil. dren unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids. 2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremoft, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Jofeph hindermott. 3 And he paffed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground feven times, until he came near to his brother. 4 And Efau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and killed him and they wept. 5 And he lifted up his eyes, and faw the women, and the children, and faid, Who are thofe with thee? And he faid, The children which God hath graciously given thy fervant. 6 Then the handmaidens came near, they Dinab ravibed, and their children, and they bowed them. felves. 7 And Leah alfo with her children came near, and bowed themfelves: and after came Jofeph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves. And he faid, What meaneft thou by all this drove which 1 met? And he urged him, and he took it. 12 And he faid, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee. 13 And he said unto him, My lord know eth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me; and if men thould over-drive them one day, all the flock will die. 14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pafs over be fore his fervant: and I will lead on fortly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir. 15 And Efau faid, Let me now leave with thee fome or the folk that are with me. And he faid, What needeth it? Let me find grace in the light of my lord. 16 So Efau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, ard built him an houfe, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. 18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram, and pitched his tent before the city. 19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money. 20 And he erected there an altar, and call ed it El-elohe-Ifrael. CHAP. XXXIV. Dinah ravibed. 20 The Shechemites are circumcifed, 25 flain by the fans of Jacob, 27 and their city spoiled. the bare unfo Jacob, went out to fee ND Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which the daughters of the land. 2 And when Shechem, the fon of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, faw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. 3 And his foul clave unto Dinah the daugh ter of Jacob; and he loved the damfel, and fpake kindly unto the damfel. 4 And Shechem spake unto his father Ha mor, faying, Get me this damfel to wife. 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Di nah his daughter, (now his fons were with his cattle in the field,) and Jacob held hi peace until they were come. Chap. xxxv. ters unto you. 10 Aad ye thall dwell with us: and the land fall be before you: dwell and trade ye therein, and get you poffeffions therein. 11 And Shechem faid unto her father, and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye thall fay unto me I will give. 12 Afk me never fo much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye thall fay unto me: but give me the damfel to wife. 13 And the fous of Jacob anfwered Shethem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and faid (because he had defiled Dinah their fifer,) 14 And they laid unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our fifter to one that is uneircumcifed: for that were a reproach un. to us. 15 But in this will we confent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcifed; 16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will be come one people. 17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcifed; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone. 18 And their words pleafed Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's fon. 19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father. 20 And Hamor and Shechem his fon came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, faying, 21 These men are peaceable with us, there. fore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large e. nough for them: let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only herein will the men confent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcifed, as they are circumcifed. 23 shall not their cattle, and their fub ftance, and every beaft of their's, be our's? Only let us confent unto them, and they will dwell with us. 24 And unto Hamor, and unto Shechem his fon, hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city: and every male was circumcifed, all that went out of the gate of his city. 25 And it came to pafs on the third day, When they were fore, that two of the fons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his fword, and came upon the city boldly, and flew all the males. 26 And they flew Hamor and Shechem his fon with the edge of the fword, and took DiBah out of Shechem's houfe, and went out. 37 The fons of Jacob came upon the Dain, Jacob fent to Beth-gl and fpoiled the city: because they had defled their fifter. 28 They took their theep, and their oxen, and their affes, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field. 29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives, took they captive, and fpoiled even all that was in house. 30 And Jacob faid to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to make me to ftink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites, and the Perizzites; and I being few in number, they fhall gather them. felves together against me, and tlay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house. 31 And they faid, Should he deal with our fifter as with an harlot? XXXV. 1 Godfendeth Jacob in Bethel: 2 he purge th AND God faid unto Jacob, Arife, go up 2 Then Jacob faid unto his houthold, and 3 And let us arife, and go up to Beth-el: and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the ftrange gods which were in their hand, and all their ear-rings which were in their ears: and Ja cob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. 5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not purfue after the fons of jacob. 6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, (that is Beth-el,) he, and all the people that were with him. 7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el; becaufe there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. 8 But Deborah, Rebekah's nurfe, died, and fhe was buried beneath Beth-el under an oak: and the name of it was called Allon-bachuth. 9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-arani, and bless ed him. 10 And God faid unto him, Thy name is Ja. cob: thy name thall not be called any more Jacob, but Ifrael thall be thy name; and he called his name Ifrael. 11 And God faid unto him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful, and multiply: a nation, and a company of nations, shall be of thee; and kings ihall come out of thy loins: 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Ifaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy feed after thee will I give the land. 13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. 14 And Jacob fet up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of ftone; and he poured a drink-offering there. on, and he poured oil thereon. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God pake with him, Beth-cl.
