glory. Suffer us not to quench the light of truth, nor even to grieve the Holy Spirit, whereby we are sealed unto the day of redemption.

And now, our Father-God, impart to us an evening smile. Wearied with the busy scenes of earth and the cares of time, we commend ourselves to thy protection during the darkness of the night. Compose us to sleep. Refresh our bodies with the balmy repose of midnight hours, and renew our spiritual strength. May our last thoughts be of thee, and our waking desires be to the remembrance of thy name. And as the servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as the hireling looketh for the reward of his work, so may we look forward to that world of repose where the alternations of day and of night, of joy and sorrow, of weariness and rest are unknown. Teach us ever to watch and pray, and to be always ready, seeing we know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of man cometh.

Extend thy merciful care to all our beloved acquaintance. May those endeared to us by the ties of nature be yet more dear by the stronger bonds of grace. Have mercy on any of them who are impenitent. Conduct them to that ark into which, moved by fear, we have entered. May they be saved in the day of the Lord; and, ere that period arrive, may we be all one in Christ Jesus.

We offer prayer for the suffering and sorrowful. Comfort them that mourn. Preserve such as are exposed to danger, on land or sea. Give ease to those who are racked with pain, and sanctify their transient woes to their eternal good. Be

nigh to thy people who are sinking into death. May heaven be opened to their believing view, and angel-bands conduct them, with exceeding joy, to the happy regions of unclouded day.

Hear us, O God of our salvation, for the sake of thine Anointed. Accept our thanksgivings, through the Great High Priest, who offered up himself. Send down an answer to our petitions, through our Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.

And now may the Lord bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace. Amen, and Amen.

FRIDAY MORNING.

O Lord our God, thou art very great, thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who in the heavens can be compared unto thee? Among the sons of the mighty there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works, for thou art great and doest wondrous things. Thy greatness might make us afraid; but thy condescension displayed in the messages of thy word, and in the ministry of thy Son, encourages us to draw nigh to thee with humble boldness. Thou hast commanded us to pray always, and in every thing by prayer and supplication to make our requests known unto thee. With our souls have we desired thee in the night,

and now, on the return of another day, with our spirits within us, we will seek thee early.

May our prayer come into thy holy temple, where is the lamp ordained for thine anointed, the altar of incense, and the High Priest of our profession. Never would we endeavour to approach thee without a reference to his sacrifice, who is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, and through whom acceptable worship has been presented by thy people in all ages. Nor would we be content to refer acts of mere formal worship to his atonement, but desire to be conscious of the immediate presence of Deity, and to serve thee with sincerity and reverence, with confidence and love, for thou seekest such to worship thee. We would now take with us words of penitential prayer, and turn to the Lord. God be merciful unto us sinners. Lord, save or we perish. We sinners do beseech thee to hear us, for the sake of Jesus, whom thou hearest always. Forgive our transgressions, cast our sins as a stone into the depths of the sea; and as far as the east is from the west, so far do thou remove our iniquities from us. We crave with earnestness the blessing of pardon, as the one thing needful, without which time will prove to us a wretched period, and eternity the duration of intolerable woe.

We bless thee, O God, for that provision of mercy revealed in the gospel, procured by the sacrifice of infinite value, and presented to sinners without money and without price. By grace are they saved, through faith, and this faith is thy gift. May we comprehend fully the plan of

salvation, and, renouncing our own merit, embrace thy method of justifying the ungodly. Enable us, by faith, to cast our burden of guilt upon Jesus; to confess over him our iniquities; and to find in him a complete exemption from condemnation and death. Being justified by faith, may we have peace with thee through our Lord Jesus Christ. Introduced by him to the joys and responsibilities of the christian life, may we increase in every good work. Promote our sanctity, our purity, and our happiness, by the arrangements of thy providence, and by the influence of thy grace, so that we may form a part of that glorious church to be presented to thee without spot or wrinkle.

During the hours of this day be near to us, O Lord. We know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. Send thy angel before us, and order our steps according to thy word. Strengthen us with might in our souls, and at evening may we gratefully review the hours of the day, and feel that we have walked with God. Let every day's advance in the journey of life bring us nearer to that world in which the nations of the saved walk in the light of the Lamb. May our thoughts have a high aim while we sojourn in the low vale of time; and, like the patriarchs who went out in quest of a country, may we declare plainly that we seek a city unseen and eternal in the heavens.

Hear us, as we pray to thee for the inhabitants of our apostate world. What millions are yet ignorant of thy character, and of the method of re

demption through our Lord Jesus Christ. Send thy word to all the nations, and pour out thy Spirit upon all flesh. Bless the labours of all pastors, evangelists, and christian teachers in our country and in other lands; and let none of them have occasion to complain that they have laboured in vain or have spent their strength for nought. Crown with thy blessing the instrumentality employed by the great religious institutions of our day, which aim at ameliorating the condition of men, by leading them to the knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus. Give wisdom to their managers, and raise up suitable agents for the various departments of christian enterprise. Let the spirit of liberality regulate the contributions made by thy people for the work, and may their efforts to evangelize the world be greatly prospered. Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us; and establish thou the work of our hand upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. Let these our prayers and thanksgivings enter into the ear of the Lord of Sabaoth. May answers of peace be vouchsafed to us through the merit of the Saviour, who agonized in the garden and poured out his blood upon the cross. And to the Father of an infinite majesty, to thine honourable, true, and only Son, and to the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, be glory. Amen.
