The Four forementioned Prayers are not here printed at length, because most of them, as to the matter and fubftauce of them, will fall within the Litany, which will be warranted by Scripture fufficiently. But here let it be noted, that we pray in particular for Kings, in pursuance of that Precept of the Apoftle, 1 Tim. 2. 1, 3. which is preffed and urged with this reason, that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and Lonefty.

We pray for the Church, which is excellently defcribed by Bishops, Curates, and the People committed to their charge, all which make up a Church rightly conftituted; and Ignatius the Dif ciple of St. John the Evangelift, tells us, that there can be no truly conftituted Church without a Bifhop. By Curates here are not meant Stipendaries, but all Minifters to whom the Bishop hath committed the cure and care of Souls.

For the right conftituting of a Church, and for preferving of it when it is constituted and fetled,

We pray for the healthful Spirit of God's Grace to be poured down upon all, who profefs Chrift and embrace Chriftianity with Sincerity. The terms wherein we pray may feem ftrange, in regard we present our Prayers to the Almighty and everlasting God, who only worketh great Marvels; but this expreffion hath a peculiar reference to Gods fending down of his holy Spirit upon the Apoftles, whereby they were enabled to speak in all Languages the wonderful works of God, Act, 2. 11. and to confirm that Doctrine by Miracles, which they taught the World.

The Prayer of St. Chryfoftom, who lived about the Fourth Century, is grounded upon Mat. 18. v, 19. 20. and may be met with Word for Word in his Liturgy.

We begin and end the Morning Service with the Apoftle; as we begin the Exhortation in an Apoftolical Stile. fo we conclude the Prayers with an Apoftolical Prayer; and conclude moft of our Prayers and Collects with this claufe, Through Fefus Christ our Lord, because there is no coming to God but by Chrift; what we ask ( as we ought) in his Name, God will give us for his fake. He is our Jacobs Ladder, by whom our Prayers afcend to God, and Gods bleffings defcends to us; all good things come from God the Father, through Jefus Christ our Lord.

2 Cor. 13. 14.
