Ps. cxxxiii. 1.

THE UNITY OF THE CHURCH. The plea- Behold, how good and how pleasant it is santunity. for brethren to dwell together in unity. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

The one fold.

Christ's

oneness.

I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them prayer for also which shall believe on Me through their word; That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.

One mind.

That their hearts might be comforted, Col. ii. 2.

God, and of the Father, and of Christ.

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism.

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

BIBLICAL READINGS.

SUBJECT: THE DUTIES OF CHURCH MEMBERS.

Salutation to the church. Unto the church of God ... to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus, Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. i. 2, 3.

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Col. i. 9.

Love to the brethren. But as touching brotherly love, ye need not that I write unto you ; for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. Thess. iv. 9.

1

Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf. 2 Cor. viii. 24.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one ano

ther. Rom. xii. 10.

To do good. But to do good and to communicate forget not; for with such sacrafices God is well pleased. Heb. xiii. 16.

Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Rom. xii. 13.

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, be patient to all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 1 Thess. v. 14, 15.

But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. 2 Thess. iii. 13.

Bear reproach. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evil doer, or as a busybody in other

men's matters.

Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 1 Pet. iv. 15, 16.

THE DUTIES OF CHURCH MEMBERS.

Give in proportion to ability. Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 1 Cor.

xvi. 1.

For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 2 Cor. viii. 12.

Subjection to each other. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder: yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pet. v. 5.

Not to follow party leaders. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas, and I of Christ.

Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptised in the name of Paul? 1 Cor. i. 12, 13.

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers, by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 1 Cor. iii. 5, 6.

Unity. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Rom. xii. 18.

Endeavouring to keep the

579

unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph. iv. 3.

Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your Own conceits.

Rom. xii. 16. Sympathy. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Rom. xii. 15.

Consideration for the weak. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat for whom Christ died. Rom. xiv. 15.

Let not then your good be evil spoken of. Rom. xiv. 16.

It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Rom. xiv. 21.

Help. We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. Rom xv. 1, 2.

Duty to the erring. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and
