14 Behold, their prince, who fell long fince
From truth and glory down,

By falfehood he, through God's decree,
Soon loft his high renown:

He travails ftill with only ill,

And falfehood does conceive;
Lo, falfehood's birth is all his mirth;
For falfehood he shall grieve.

15 He made a pit, and digged it,

And he is fall'n therein:

16 Thus mifchief fhall, returning, fall On all the men of fin.

17 But I will praife, in loftieft lays,
Confeffing to the Lord,

His righteoufnefs, and faithfulness,
According to his word.
Meffiah's fong fhall fpread along,
And fill the heav'ns and earth,

Diffufing all around the ball,
His glory, joy, and mirth.

PSALM VIII.

THIS Pfalm, fimilar in fpirit and fubject to the id with its parallels, as explained, Matth. xi. 25. and xxi. 16. 1 Cor. i. 27. Heb. ii. 6, 7. and 1 Cor. IV. 27. clearly afcertains and demonftrates the Lord Jefus Chrit alfo to be the fubject of Pfalms cxin. and cxlviii. with others referred to the readerAs to the meaning or fpirit of these univerfal expreffions, All fheep and oxen,' &c. being made fubject to Chrift, confult Ifa. lx. with its parallels, as interpreted in New-Teftament language, without figure or parallel, according to the words of the Lord, All that the Father hath given me, 'fhall come unto me' and 'All power in heaven and earth is given unto me.And, fpeaking to the Facher, John xvii. 4. Thou haft given him

(the Son) power over all flesh, that he might give eternal life to as many as thou hast given

him.'

N. B. As fome inconfiderate perfons have not been wanting, who have thought proper to controvert the view here given of this Pfalm, and most abfurdly to apply it to Adam; I fhall here quote the words of the prophet, above referred to, at length- The abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee; the forces of the Gentiles fhall come unto thee. The multitude of camels fhall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba fhall come they 'fhall bring gold and incenfe, and they fhall fhew * forth the praife of the Lord. All the flocks of Kedar fhall be gathered together unto thee; the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they fhall come up with acceptance on mine altar, • and I will glorify the houfe of my glory;' Ifa. lx. 5, 6, 7. To the fame purpose in other places, The

lion and the lamb fhall lie down together; and the • child fhall play on the hole of the afp,' &c.—Meaning, that people of all tongues, kindreds, nations,

and languages, barbarians, Scythians, bond and free,' reprefented by thefe figures, fhall, by the everlasting gofpel, be fubdued and converted to the kingdom of the Meffiah; who, in point of authority, commiffion, and power, is the Lord and Heir of all things, reigning at the Father's right hand, till his enemies be made his footstool; but all things are not yet actually subdued by their Lord, nor fhall they all in fact be put under him, until the time of the restoration of all things, when the laft enemy, death, fhall be deftroyed, and death and hell fhall be caft into the lake which burneth with fire and brinftone; when the kingdom fhall be delivered up to the Father, and God shall be, all in all.

Meffiah, blefs'd for evermore,
Ye fons of God, exalt, adore;

[blocks in formation]

Afcribe to him the glory due;
For he the kingdom won for you:
Behold, his Godhead ftands confeft,
Of all his Father's pow'r poffeft:

Let heav'n, and earth, and feas, and all,
Under his feet fubjected fall.

Lord, our Lord, how gloriously
Haft thou advanc'd thy name on high,
Above the earth, above the heav'n!
To thee alone be glory giv'n!

2 From mouths of babes and fucklings, lo,
Thou makeft, Lord, thy praises flow:
With fpirits fervent how they fing
Hofannas to the Lord their King!

Ye rulers, ftand reproved here,
And lend the babes your list'ning ear:
If these were now to hold their

peace,
The ftones would cry out in their place→→
3 When I behold the fpacious sky,
With all thy glorious works on high,
The moon with all her ftarry hoft,
Who fuch a great Creater boaft;

4 I'm loft in wonder and furprize,

[ocr errors]

My heart within me melts, and cries,
Lord, what is man! how great is he,
When all thefe but his fervants be,
Who nightly round him fhine and run!-
But what are they to thee, O fun!
Eclips'd by thee, their glory dies,
And vanishes from all the fkies.-

So fades the fun, and waxes wan,
Compar'd to thee, O Son of Man!
The Sun, and all whereon he fhines,
Like fhades of night when day declines,
Hide their diminish'd face, and fly
To nothing-when Meffiah's nigh:

C

For

dim.

For thou, Jehovah, filleft him
With light that never fhall grow
5 Yet Him, eclips'd a little while,
Inveil'd in flesh, like mortals vile,
Below the angels thou haft made,
And in the mould'ring tomb haft laid.-
But fhall the Son corruption fee,
Triumphed o'er, O Death, by thee?
Nay; Death, by death, he shall destroy,
And life, eternal life, enjoy.-

Jehovah, thou haft rais'd him high,
And made him to thy face draw nigh,
With all thy glory overfpread,

With all thine honours crown'd his head.
6 Thy kingdom he thall well maintain,
And o'er thy works for ever reign:
The earth, the air, the fire, the fea,
Themselves beneath his feet fhall lay.

7 Thy fubjects all fhall come, and greet,
And lick the duft before his feet:
The angels and archangels high,
In low fubmiffion keen fhall vie;
Themselves their tribute, earthly things,
Shall humbly bring the King of Kings;
The fheep, from ev'ry paft'ring hill,
Shall all around the circle fill:

The oxen, from the flow'ry field,
Shall, ev'ry hoof, their homage yield;
The wild beafts, tam'd, in thousand droves,
Shall run to him from all their groves;
8 The fowls of air fhall fill the fky,
And, hov'ring, round their Sov'reign fly;
The whales, with all their following train,
Shall roll the tribute of the main.

Thus, all who breathe the breath of life,
Shall nobly vie in loyal ftrife,

Thro'

(Thro' nature's univerfal form,

9

From th' angel to the creeping worm),
Who fhall the choiceft prefent bring,
And loudest acclamations fing,
Who loweft in fubmiffion fall
Before Meffiah, Lord of all.-

In name of our eternal God,
We'll found the joyful news abroad,
Meffiah reigns for evermore!'.
Let God's redeem'd the Lord adore!
O Lord, our Lord, how gloriously
Haft thou advanc'd thy name on high,
Above the earth, above the heav'n!
To thee alone be glory giv❜n!

To juftify the interpretation of this Pfalm, as fpoken in the perfon of the Meffiah, according to the paraphrafe, the reader will do well to confider the text; and fo let him judge, if it would not be abfurd to interpret it otherwife. But, if that does not fatisfy him, let him confult the parallels, particularly Pfalms xxxv. and lvii.

Exalted to his Father's throne,
And reigning by his pow'r,
Melfiah, who the kingdom won,
Shall Antichrift devour:
Nor man, nor fpirit, fhall escape,
Against him who rebel ;

For Antichrift, in ev'ry shape,

Must be confign'd to hell.

I'LL praife thee, Lord, with my whole heart, And all the world shall know;

I'll raife thy fame with all mine art,

And make my fong to

fong to glow.
