Lo, I thy righteous will have done,
Thy righteous paths have trod :
God of my righteoufnefs, I call,
I claim my merits due;
For gladly I a victim fall,

And gladly pay my vow.

Thou haft releas'd my troubled foul,
Imprifon'd in the duft;

P

And now thou wilt perfect the whole
Concernments of the Juft.

2 How long will ye, O fons of men,
My glory turn to fhame?
How long, purfuing fictions vain,
Profane Meffiah's name?

3 But know, ye foolish fons of ftrife,
The Lord hath chofen me,
His Holy One, the Prince of Life,
The Lord of all to be:

When to Jehovah I appeal,
--And plead my righteoufnefs,
Then he his juftice will reveal
In truth and holiness.

4 With trembling fear before him fall,
Ye finners, and repent,
Yielding to him, the Judge of all,
Ere he his anger vent :

Like children, chaften'd by the rod,
Lie ftiH, be quiet, and mufe,
Deep-trembling at the word of God,
Nor more his grace abuse.

Off'rings prefent of righteousness,

And in the Lord confide:

His love the humble heart will blefs His pow'r will punish pride. 6O, who will fhew us any good? Exclaim the grov'lling throng,

Whofe

7

Whofe fenfual fouls lurk in their blood;
They fing no other fong.

But, panting-high for joys divine,
Lo, my foul melts away-
Lord, caufe thy face on us to fhine,
And change our night to day.
More joy into my heart is pour'd,
O Lord, by fight of thee,

Than they, in corn and vintage ftor'd,
Enjoy with mirth and glee.

8 I will both lay me down in peace,
My God embracing me,

And fleep, embofom'd in his grace,
Till morning fhadows flee:
For thou, O Lord, poffeffeft me,'
And mak'ft me fafely dwell;
And thou alone fhalt fet me free
From reach of death and hell.

PASTA LM V.

To afcertain the fpeaker, and confequently the meaning of this Pfalm alfo, it is only neceffary to confider, if it can be any other than the very Christ of God, who boldly builds his plea for acceptance upon juftice, which hath no pleasure in fin, but hateth all the workers of iniquity.Thefe, under the notion of his enemies, from whom he prays to be feparated and delivered, he defcribes, as explained, Rom. iii. 13. imprecating and denoun cing vengeance against them for their rebellion againft God; and concludes with encouraging, and announcing the bleffednefs of, thofe who put their truft in the Lord, according to his own peculiar prerogative, being the Judge of all, and having all power in heaven, and earth in his hand, that those whom he bleffeth may be bleffed, and thofe whom he surfeth may be curfed.

Meffiah

I

Meffiah pleads, and gains his plea
In perfect righteousness;

But, le, from him, confounded flee
The foes of boliness:

For unbelief in Tophet ends,
And everlafting wo;

Whereas Meliah's faithful friends
With him to heav'n shall gɔ.

ORD, let thine ear drink in my tale,
And weigh my honeft fpeech

In thine own even-poized fcale,
Where envy cannot reach :
For envy hunts my foul to thee,
My Lord, my God, my King!
The fierce purfuer makes me flee
And clofely to thee cling.

2 To thee my pray'r I will display;
My groans fhall plead for me:
3 From th' ev'ning to the morning ray,
I'll fpread my hands to thee.
Mine eye fhall hang upon thy nod,
Mine ear upon thy lip;

My foul fhall hold thee faft, O God;
No fiend fhall loofe my gripe.

Both fiends and men with fubtile guile
Against my foul confpire:

Untry'd they leave no wicked wile
To vex me in their ire.

4 But thou, my God, affert my right,
Affert thy holiness;

For thou doft not in fraud delight,
Nor love unfaithfulness.

The man of God in God fhall dwell,

And God fhall dwell in him;

But evil men inhabit nell,

And hell inhabits them.

5 All things confift by God the Lord:
The Lord upholds them all;

But raging fools, who fcern his word,
By his decree fhall fall :

His eyes fhall fright and scatter them,
And drive them far away,
Like darkness fcatter'd by the beam
That cheers the face of day.
6 For men of blood and perfidy,
Are curs'd in all their ways:
The workers of iniquity,

The Lord detefts and flays

But I into thine house will come,

And feaft upon thy love;

Thine holy mount fall be my home:
No term fhall me remove.

My ways fhall all fupported be,
My heart comforted too,

In perfect rectitude, by thee,

Who feeft and feal'ft me TRUE,

But as for thofe mine enemies,
Against whom I implore,
With their unjuft confed'racies,
Who me opprefs fo fore;

Within their mouth there is no truth,

Their very breath is hell;

Their throat's an open grave, and dọth
Breathe peftilential fmell;

Whilft yet their words, tike dropping oil,
Diftilling from their tongue,

With fly infinuating guile,

Sound as a lovely fong:

10 Deftroy them, God, and caufe them fall
By thine avenging sword;

O'erwhelm and foil their counfels all
By thy decifive word.

Through

Through multitude of ftratagems,
Devis'd by them and hell,

Lord, let them, with their very names,
Be raz'd, who dare rebel-i

II But they who, fill'd with faith and hope,
Depend on thee, O God,
Rejoicing in a perfect scope,
Shall fing in thine abode :
Exulting in thy love divine,

And fhouting o'er their toil,
They laugh to fee the vict'ry thine,
And triumph o'er the spoil.
12 And laugh they may, exult and fing,
And fhout for evermore;

For I, their Shepherd, Lord, and King,
Their forrows all have bore.

Jehovali, therefore, with his love
Hath circled all around,
And, King o'er all the heav'ns above,
His own Meffiah crown'd:
In God's Meffiah let them joy,
Who God's Meffiah love,

For they the kingdom fhall enjoy,
And reign with him above..

PSALM VI.

[ocr errors]

In this Pfalm alfo, there is only one fpeaker ;; and he, as being himfelf altogether free from unrighteoufnefs, has authority to fay, Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.'-Thefe words, cited from this and other Pialis, are fpo-ken by the Lord, Matth. vii. 23. If any dubiety ftill remain in your mind concerning the person who faith thefe things, confult Heb. v. 7. Phil. ii.. 6. John v. 22. Matth. vii. 23. and xxv, 41.
