that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the fame will betray me. The Son of Man goeth indeed, as it is written of him: but wo to that man, by whom the Son of Man fhall be betrayed: it had been better for that man, if he had never been born. C. Then Judas, who betrayed him, anfwering, faid: S. Mafter, is it 1? C. He faid to to him: † Thou haft said it. C. And while they were at fupper, Jefus took bread, and bleffed it, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said: + Take ye and eat: this is my body. C. And taking the cup, he gave thanks, and gave it to them, faying: + Drink you all of this: for this is my blood of the New Teftament, which shall be shed for many to the remiffion of fins. But I fay to you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, till that day, when I fhall drink it new with you in my father's kingdom. C. And having faid a hymn, they went out to mount Olivet. Then Jefus faith to them: + All of you will be fcandalized in me this night for it is written: I will frike the fhepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be difperfed. But after I am rifen again, I will go before you into Galilee. C. Then Peter anfwering, faid to him: S. Though all the rest should be fcandalized in thee, yet will I never be fcandalized. C. Jefus faid to him: Amen, I say to thee: this night before the cock croweth, thou wilt deny me thrice. C. Peter faid to him: S. Tho' I were to die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. C. And all the difciples likewife faid the fame. Then Jefus came with them to a village called Gethsemani, and faid to his difciples: + Sit you here, while I go thither and pray. C. And he took with him Peter and the two fons of Zebedee, and began to be fad and forrowful. Then he faith to them: + My foul is forrowful even unto death: Stay you here, and d Expl. It is as thou fayeft. e Expl. I am feized with forrow capable of putting an end to my life. VOL. II. P

watch with me. C. And going a little farther, he fell on his face, and prayed, faying: † my father, if it be poffible, let this cup pafs from me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. C. And coming to his disciples, he found them fleeping: and he faith to Peter: + What? Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation. The fpirit indeed is ready, but the flesh is weak. C. He went away again the fecond time, and prayed, saying: +Omy Father, if this cup cannot pafs from me, but I muft drink it, thy will be done. C. And he came again, and found them afleep; for their eyes: were heavy. And leaving them, he went again and prayed the third time, faying the fame words. Then he cometh to his disciples, and faith to them: + Sleep on now, and take your reft: behold the hour is near, and the Son of Man fhall be betrayed into the hands of finners. Rife, let us go: behold he, that will betray me, is at hand. C. While he was yet speaking, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came; and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, fent by the chief priests and elders of the people. And he that betrayed him, had given them a fignal, faying: S. He whom I fhall kifs, is the man, lay hold on him. G. And coming forthwith to fefus, he faid: S. Hail, mafter! C. And he kiffed him. And Jefus faid to him: + Friend, for what art thou come? C. Then they came and laid hands on him, and took him. And behold one of them that were with Jefus, ftretching forth his hand, drew his sword, and ftriking the high prieft's fervant, cut off his ear. Then Jefus faid to him: + Put up thy fword: again into it's place: for all that take the fword, fhall perish by the fword. Doft thou think, I cannot afk it of my Father, and he will give me prefently more than twelve legions of angels? How then fhall the fcriptures be fulfilled, which foretell that thus it muft be. C. In that fame hour Jefus faid to

the multitude: + You are come out, as against a highwayman, to take me with fwords and clubs. I fat daily with you teaching in the temple, and you feized me not. C. And all this was done that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all his difciples abandoning him, fled away. But they holding Jefus, brought him to Caiphas, the high prieft, where the Scribes and elders were affembled. But Peter followed him at a diftance, even to the high priest's court. And going in, he fat down with the fervants, to fee the iffue. And the chief priests, with all the council, fought falfe witness against Jefus, that they might put him to death: but they found none, tho' many falfe witnefles had come in. At laft, two falfe witneffes came, and faid: S. This man faid; I can deftroy the temple of God, and after three days rebuild it again. C. And the high prieft rifing up faid to him: S. Answereft thou nothing to what these men witness against thee? C. But Jefus fpoke not. And the high priest faid to him: S. I conjure thee, by the living God, to tell us, if thou art the Christ, the Son of God? C. Jefus faid to him: + Thou haft faid it. Moreover I fay to you: hereafter you fhall fee the Son of Man fitting at the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven. C. Then the high prieft rent his garments, faying: S. He hath blafphemed: what farther need have we of witneffes? Behold you have now heard his blafphemy: What think you? C. And they anfwering, faid: S. He is guilty of death. C. Then they fpit in his face, and buffeted him; and others ftruck him on the face with the palms of their hands, faying: S. Prophefy to us, O thou the Chrift, who it is that ftruck thee? C. Now Peter fat without in the court: and a maid came to him, faying: S. Thou also wast with Jefus of Galilee: C. But he denied it before all, faying: S. I know not what

thou fayeft. C. And, as he went out of the gate, another maid faw him, and faid to thofe that were there: S. This man alfo was with Jefus of Nazareth. C. And he again denied it with an oath, faying: I know not the man. And a little

after, they that stood there, came to Peter and faid: S. Certainly thou also art one of them; for thy fpeech discovereth thee. C. Then he began to proteft and fwear, he knew not the man. And presently the cock crowed. And Peter called to mind what Jefus had faid: Before the cock croweth, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth he wept bitterly. And when it was morning, all the chief priests and elders of the people confulted against Jefus, to put him to death. And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, who had betrayed him, feeing him condemned, touched with repentance, brought again the thirty pieces of filver to the chief priests and elders, faying: S. I have finned in betraying righteous blood. C. But they faid S. What is it to us? Look thou to that. C. And cafting down the pieces of filver in the temple, he departed; and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests taking the filver, faid: S. It is not lawful to put it in the treasury, because it is the price of blood. C. And having confulted together, they bought with it the Potters-field for the burial of ftrangers. For this reafon that field is called Haceldama, that is, the field of blood, even to this day. Then was fulfilled, what was spoke by the prophet Jeremy, faying: And they took thirty pieces of filver, the price of him that was fet at a price, whom they bought for a price of the children of Ifrael, and they gave them for the Potters-field, as the Lord appointed me. And Jefus ftood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying: S. Art thou the King of the Jews? C. Jefus faith to him: + Thou fayeft it. C. And being accufed by the chief priests

and elders, he answered nothing. Then Pilate faith to him: S. Doft thou not hear how many teftimonies they urge against thee? C. And he anfwered him not to any word, fo that the governor wondered exceedingly. Now at the feftival-day the governor was wont to release to the people fome one prifoner, whom they pleased. And he had then a very notorious one, called Barabbas. And they being affembled together, Pilate faid to them: S. Which will you that I release for you; Barabbas, or Jefus, who is called the Chrift? C. For he knew they had committed him out of envy. And as he was fitting on the judgment-feat, his wife fent to him, faying: S. Have nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have fuffered very much this day in a dream, upon his account. C. But the chief priests and elders perfuaded the people to demand Barabbas, and deftroy Jefus. Then the governor answering, faith to them: S. Which of the two will you have difcharged? C. And they faid: S. Barabbas. C. The governor faith to them: S. What then fhall I do with Jefus, who is called the Chrift? C. They all fay: S. Let him be crucified. C. The governor replieth S. Why, what evil hath he done? C. But they cried out the more, faying: S. Let him be crucified. C. Then Pilate feeing he could not prevail, but that rather a tumult was raifed, took water, and wafhing his hands before the people, faid: S. I am clear of the blood of this righteous man; look you to it. C. And all the people anfwering, faid: S. Let his blood be on us, and on our children. C. Then he releafed to them Barab bas; and having fcourged Jefus, he delivered him up to be crucified. After which the governor's foldiers took Jefus into the common-hall, and gathered about him the whole band: and having ftripped him, they put on him a fcarlet cloak; and twifted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head,
