Effays. By the Students of the College of Fort William, in Bengal. 8vo. pp. 228. Debrett. 1803.

Thefe effays are entitled to every praise which can be beftowed on the most chaste and elegant compofitions, and are highly creditable to the talents of the juvenile candidates.

Excurfions in France, and other Parts of Europe, from 1801 to the end of 1803. By C. Maclean, M.D. 8vo. pp. 304. Longman and Co. 1804.

Doctor M. gives an animated picture of the atrocities of the French towards our countrymen, fo infamoufly detained by order of the tyrant. There is also much miscellaneous information in his work.

The merits of this work are sufficiently known. In the prefent edition the paper, printing, and decorations are the beft of their kind.

Farmer's Calendar, containing practical Explanations of the Business neceffary to be performed on various Kinds of Farms during every Month of the Year; with the Principles of various new Improvements, and Inftructions for executing them. A new Edition. By Arthur Young, Efq. F. R. S. &c. 1 vol. 8vo. Price 10s. 6d. Phillips. 1804.

The plan of this work, and the fame of its refpectable author, are already fo well known to the public, that nothing we can fay will be any recommendation to either. It is but justice, however, to obferve, that the prefent volume contains many very interefting improvements.

Fashionable World Difplayed. By Theoph. Chriftian, Efq. pp. 84. 3s. 6d. Hatchard. 1804.

One of the most excellent moral tracts which the present age has produced, and worthy of introduction into every family.

Five Promifes (The); or, the Conduct of the Confular Government towards France, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. By Sir F. d'Ivernois. 8vo. pp. 276. 7s. Ginger. 1803.

The principal object of this publication is to refute certain pofitions of M. Neckar; and to fhow that the French people feel a greater preffure from the confular, than from any monarchical government. This, as may be supposed, is completely and ably proved.

Geography for the Ufe of Schools and young Perfons in general, illuftrated with fifty Copperplates. By the Rev J. Goldfmith, Vicar of Dunnington. 1 vol. 12mo. pp. 560. Price 10s. 6d. bound. Phillips. 1804.

A book like this appears to have been much wanted; and we are particularly pleafed with the arrangement of its contents, which is calculated to give a better idea of the fituations of countries, and of their manners and cuftoms than any fimilar work that has fallen under our infpection. We have alfo particularly obferved, that the author has extracted much interefting matter from various modern books of travels, which have never been tranflated into English.

Good Tidings; or, News from the Farm. By R. Bloomfield, Author of The Farmer's Boy.' 4to. 2s. 6d. Vernor and Hood.

The fubject of this poem is the vaccine inoculation; it contains many beautiful paffages, and will not fail to increase the great reputation which the author has already attained.

Grammar of Geography (An easy); intended as a Com

panion and Introduction to the Geography for the

Ufe of Schools, with Maps, &c. By the Rev. J.
Goldsmith. 1 vol. 18mo. Phillips. 1804.

This little manual will be found very useful for youth, who are not much acquainted with geography. It confifts of questions, answers, and definitions.

Guilty, or not Guilty: a Play, in five Acts. By T.
Dibdin, Efq. 1804.

This is an uncommonly humorous production: it excites inceffant rifibility, with no fmall portion of interest. We think it the best attempt of the ingenious author.

H.

Heliodora; or, the Grecian Minstrel. From the German of Goëthe. 3 vols. 12mo. Dutton. 1804..

An interefting and moral tale, from the pen of a writer formerly celebrated for the immorality and impiety of his productions.

Hiftory of France, from 1790 to the Peace of Amiens. By J. Adolphus, Efq. 2 vols 8vo. pp. 1380. 1. 4s. Kearfley. 1803.

A compilation, which, notwithstanding its extent, comprifes only a brief sketch of the events which have occurred in the above important interval. Mr. A. is a correct, but by no means an animated or elegant writer.

Hiftory of Modern and Contemporary Voyages and
Travels. Phillips. 1804.

This is a new monthly publication, which, from the fpecimens already produced, promises to be very fuccessful, inafmuch as it has fome claims to the attention of the public, of which no fimilar undertaking could boaft. We have only room to obferve, that it is divided into three parts. Part I. confifts of TRANSLATIONS from all foreign languages. Part II. original voyages and travels, never before published. And Part III. analyses of all interesting voyages and travels published in London. It is of courfe evident, that several perfons are concerned in the literary department; but the editor of the whole is a gentleman well known to OUR readers, and who, at a future time, will doubtless be induced to avow himself.

Hiftory (A brief) of Ancient and Modern India, from the earliest periods of Antiquity to the Conclufion of the late Mahratta War. By Francis William Blagdon, Efq. 1 vol. folio, with fixty-fix fuperb, coloured Engravings. Price TWENTY GUINEAS, Edward Orme, his Majefty's Printseller.

From the above title it will be evident, that this work is not calculated for general perufal, but it may be confidered as a splendid monument of the state of the graphic and typographic arts at the commencement of the nineteenth century. It is honoured with the names, as fubfcribers, of all the most diftinguished characters in the kingdom. His majesty is at the head of the lift; then follow the royal dukes and princeffes, the principal nobility, the court of directors, &c. &c. Such patronage confers an enviable honour upon the pub1 lifher as well as upon the author. See alfo Views and Coftume.

Hiftory of the Powder Plot, with feveral historical Circumftances relative to that Event. By J. Caulfield. With Portraits of the Confpirators. 1 vol. pp. 94. Vernor and Hood. 1804.

The portraits in this volume are interefting; but we can by no means fay as much of the text, which is far too brief to answer either the purpose of entertainment or information. The defcriptions of fome of the characters are contained in a few lines. The printing and paper are amongst the best we ever met with.

Hiftory of a Dog, written by himself, and publifhed by a Gentleman of his acquaintance. Tranflated from the French of Pigault Le Brun. Minerva Press. 1804.

This is a novel which rivals Pompey the Little; the tranflator deferves much praife, for having given such an animated copy of its entertaining original.

Invalid (The), with the obvious Means of enjoying Health and long Life. By a Nonagenarian, Editor of The Spiritual Quixote,' 'Columella,' ' Re

veries of Solitude,' &c. 1 vol. crown 8vo. Phil lips. 1804.

The respectable author of this useful little tract, the Rev. W. Graves, in the 90th year of his age, has juft paid the debt of nature, and we will venture to say, that the majority of our readers, by following such inftructions as he has laid down, would also have a great chance of arriving at their grand climacteric.

Invafion: a Defcriptive and Satyrical Poem. By J. Amphlett, Author of The War Offering,' &c. 1 vol. fmall 8vo. pp. 80. Longman and Co. 1804. A very fpirited effufion, to which we should have done ample justice, by quotation, had it been received in time.

L.

La Valliere (Duchess of): a historical Romance. By Mad. de Genlis. 2 vols. 12mo. pp. 480. Mur

[blocks in formation]

A work of much ability, but not very recommendable, confidering that it is the hiftory of a proftitute. Such a romance cannot be advantageous to modeft readers.

Letters written by the late Earl of Chatham to his Nephew, the late Lord Camelford. 8vo. pp. 133.

5s. Payne. 1804.

Any thing from the pen of Lord Chatham cannot fail to excite the greatest interest. The letters are valuable, inasmuch as they disclose the temper and feelings of that eminent man, and his judgment of rifing genius.

Letters written during a Tour through South Wales, in 1803, &c. &c. By the Rev. J. Evans, B.A. 8vo. pp. 450. 8s. Baldwins. 1804.

Mr. Evans's former tour contained confiderable information; but the prefent is, in many refpects, fuperior. It is peculiarly interefting to the antiquarian.

Letters of Advice from a Mother to her Son. Svo. pp. 464. 8s. Cadell and Davies. 1803.
